Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.8/100, a mean average of 66.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.0.

(As much as I generally like the work of Ben Howard and his brand of almost numb sadness I for some reason didn't connect with this album. Some good songs and I still love the bones of his sound and probably always will)
Not much to say about this. This album bored me at many points and at other more coldly electronic bits on this album I was actually turned off and it felt awkward and pointless. I love his first couple albums and especially his brilliant 2014 studio album (is on my chart or it was can't remember if it still is) and there is something so real and right about his deadened vocal delivery and the way he weaves his vocals into these ambient electronic sounds and more traditional acoustic sounds. That amazing quality is still sprinkled into this album. But more often there is a harsh, overly-cold layer of quasi-industrial sound that pervades this album and I just didn't buy-in at any point. I will come back at some point to this album. But for now I am a bit disappointed in the way I responded to this most recent Howard album.
