Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. In the niche world of Americana, sparse acoustic production reigns supreme, but the genre has many roots in soul and classic R&B, so it's wonderful whenever an artist makes a record with rich production and soulful vocals.
This is in the top 5 Americana and country music albums of 2021.
Yola has an amazing voice. From the soul ballads to country tunes, there is not a single note that she does not put her all into. The high point of the album is when her backing vocals kick in on the last chorus of "If I Had To Do It All Again". This talent is held back by the familiarity of the songs. Both thematically and structurally, I feel like I have heard a slightly different version of every track. This robs the album of real emotional or instrumental resonance. Given more novel material, I believe Yola has the talent for true greatness.
