I think Roundthebend's list pretty much rounds out the "essentials" as far as pre-1900 classical music goes. For the 20th century, I would add All-Night Vigil by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass. For something very recent but still classical: Classical pieces and…

Emily D'Angelo conducts and sings on this classical album which features compositions and arrangements exclusively by women, unfortunately rare in classical music. Composers/arrangers include modern American composers Missy Mazzoli, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (composer of Chernobyl and Joker), as well as (Saint) Hildegard von Bingen, medieval composer / abbess / philosopher / scientist / doctor / botanist. If it wasn't clear from all her occupational accomplishments, she was perhaps one of the most brilliant people who ever lived (certainly if Leonardo da Vinci is held on that pedestal, Hildegard must be as well).

Well anyway, the selection of music is great, as is D'Angelo's voice (and conducting on a few tracks, those are the highlights for me). Hildur Guðnadóttir's compositions are the most interesting to me, perhaps because I favor cello music. And she writes the cello parts very prominently in her music.

High recommend to anyone who's looking for new modern classical music.
