“Vlad Tapes” is sprawling and vampiric. Filmmaker abandons traditional song structure in favor of four long diverse sides. The advantage of this approach is the variety in each side. Slamming synths and mechanic percussion will switch from groove to groove. When this goes well, the momentum builds and the atmosphere is fantastic. The downside is the length is as draining as the albums namesake when not a complete success. “Side Count Orlok” lacks the ingenuity of the other sides and becomes a 23 minute sink for buildup. The following “Side Dracula” is much better but left over listening fatigue limits it. “Vlad tapes” is ambitious but a smaller bat would have drawn more blood.
