This is a delightful look into the best years of Owens’ career. It assembles all the chronological A-sides and B-sides released on Capitol during this excellent period. Disc 1 includes the first single mis-steps (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and then his early honky tonk period. The weakest part of the collection fills out the rest of Disc 1. A bonus is a few duets with the talented Rose Maddox, another honky tonk misfit with a powerful and passionate voice.
Disc 2 kicks off with the new “freight train” sound that came to be labeled the Bakersfield sound and does not let up until the end. It is truly a delight to hear these sides assembled in chronological order, as many killer B-sides from this era (ie Gonna Have Love and No One But You) are frequently omitted from greatest hits compilations.
Essential, especially to see the thorough development of the infamous Bakersfield sound.
