Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.8/100, a mean average of 67.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.6.

It may not be the stone cold classic High Land Hard Rain is, but this proves Roddy Frame was no one album wonder. Songs like All I Need is Everything and The Birth of the True are amongst his best. Shame the somnorific cover of Van Halen's Jump wasn't included.

There lives a huge desire in this record, as deep as the melancholy of the cover art and as artificial too. A dream of the USA and if that wouldn't have been difficult enough for a British guitar pop band, they even chose the man from Britain's most american band of that time as a producer. I guess the Knopfler choice was unforgiven by many. They should listen to the album again. It's a brave and playful attempt which fails at perfection. It had to fail, that was the concept. Even at his most dylanesque, in "Birth of the truth" one may imagine Scotland as well, and a young guy, not a wannabe but a fully developed artist at his peak (ok, close to his peak) who obviously struggled for this complex musical tribute to a dream that was known to be just a dream, "just like the USA".
