Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 62.4/100, a mean average of 62.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 62.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 20.8.

Had a lot of potential, especially after the first four tracks, which was one of the strongest opening tracks for a pop album (cringe vocal effects in "Some Nights" aside), and takes a massive dip on "It Gets Better", and then get's back on track with "Why Am I the One", but then drops in quality again and never recovers. Some songs near the end are okay, the highs are pretty good for this record to get positive marks, but the lows hold back what this album could've been.

Good album. It hooked me right from the start with the Queen like intro and the ELO flourishes. It drags a little in the middle and picks up again at the end. I haven't heard Aim and Ignite so I cannot compare it to that.

Not sure why this album gets so much shit. It's a decent album, the first 4 songs or so are actually quite good, the queenesk intro, to the catchy 'some nights' and 'we are young', even if the auto tune in 'some nights' is absolutely terrible (and cringe worthy). The album's not very memorable but it's got some good pop tunes, of which there aren't many about.

There’s no wonder that fun. has drawn some comparisons to Queen. Listen to the first track on this album, the intro to “Some Nights" and you’ll hear what sounds to be almost exactly a Queen song. They manage to have that kind of a sound but still have their own unique touch to it, and that’s what I like most about this album. Lead singer Nate Ruess’s vocals are excellent and the instrumentation is superb. I highly recommend this album.

Guilty pleasure? Maybe so... the first half of this album is mostly good but it falls apart quickly thereafter. Some of the songs are plagued by needless overproduction, including overuse of auto-tune effects even though Nate is a pretty decent singer. When this album works, the songs are incredibly catchy and memorable.

The grammy winners for best new artist in 2012 and 2013 have some similarities. 2012 was Bon Iver and 2013 was fun. Both were somewhat established artists releasing their second albums so it's a little odd they were nominated for new artist, considering fun. and Justin Vernon have been making music for more than a decade, but both albums nevertheless saw both gain a ton of popularity and both made a name for themselves.

Looking at album structure too it's similar, because if you look at Bon Iver's album last year and fun. this year, both of their first halves of the album are phenomenal, but the second halves drops off considerably. I decided to check their album out after hearing We Are Young and Some Nights. Some Nights is the best song on the album. I love the African beat and it actually reminds me a lot of Lost in the World featuring Bon Iver from Kanye's album which has some of that Afro-beat as well. I was surprised at hearing the intro, it had a much more theatrical sound than I expected and the first thing that came to mind was a similar sound to Queen. The thing I like about fun. is that they sound like pop songs, but they have meaning to them if you look deeper. Nate Ruess references "tea parties and twitter, I've never been so bitter" in the intro, Some Nights sounds like an anti-war song, of course We are young has meaning and so on. But the second half just doesn't hold up as well. Still not a lot of people knew who fun. was prior to this and now they do and have a couple grammies to show for it as well, so they have to consider this a big step up for them and they were nominated in song/record/album of the year and best new artist, something only Christopher Cross did 30+ years ago, so that's saying a lot for them and I look forward to seeing them progress in their career.

At the time of writing of this comment this album is currently at 26, and honestly thats pretty much the perfect spot for this album. At it's initial release I really detested this album, but my little sister convinced me to give it another try and I'm quite glad I did. This is great pop rock at it's finest mixed in with a good dose of glam and pomp. Sure it has flaws (Janelle Monae deserves better then what she's given with in We Are Young), but overall there's some solid stuff here. Tracks like Carry On, Why Am I The One, and the opener are fantastic. The title track is the highpoint, due to not only being a great pop song, but a smart and thoughtful pop song as well. The media has often compared these guys to Queen and with a few more albums of this quality or better, that description will be pretty accurate.
