Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 11% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.6/100, a mean average of 75.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.3.

I found this album in a used lp store years ago. I’d heard that Terry Reid was almost the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, and I was curious about his music. Since I hadn’t heard much else about him, I didn’t expect much. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. Reid takes another great Donovan song (he did “Season of the Witch” on his debut) and with “Superlungs My Supergirl” he produces the definitive version, catchy and soulful at the same time. Mostly, Reid focuses on British blues like “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace” and “Stay With Me Baby,” and he delivers them with considerable passion. But his ballads are even better; Reid’s voice really resonates on “May Fly” and “July,” and the songs are sophisticated—especially the latter, which is absolutely lovely. Reid sings and performs like a rock star, and this record should have made him one. Instead he’s considered more as a musical footnote to one of rock’s biggest bands. Sad. By the way, he was 20 years old when he recorded this.
