Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.6/100, a mean average of 76.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

One that can take a while to warm to. An Alt Grunge Folk hybrid. 'Loser' is worth the admission price alone though.

Love this album! What would happen if the Beastie Boys dropped acid. Hilarious lyrics, coupled with a great use of sampling. Overall a fun time:)

very cool experimental album, "loser" is great, wish there were more tracks like that on the album. Overall a bit overrated tho

About as fun as it gets. The lyrics are hilarious and the overall sound of the album is lo-fi and and a fun mash-up of styles. It all works well together. Classic.

The opening track and some tracks here and there were kinda surprising, and it's a nice concept to throw synths in such acoustic songs, but really great they aren't; some tracks are nearly unlistenable because of the forced experimentalism - would it kill you to just make a song that is nice to listen to. And for the rest of the album he's just mimicking Kurt Cobain.

Very underwhelming album in my opinion. Knowing "Loser" already, I was expecting most other songs to at least be fun and have good guitar riffs. Outside of the last three, I thought the album was directionless and uninspiring. I think the mid-90s college crowd could've gotten something out of this, but it's not for me at all. I'll check out his other stuff though.

It's ok I guess. I do chuckle when I see the word genius associated with beck. What's genius here? Also apparently this is a highly original and innovative record. He threw a couple breaks under some tracks. Wow. Just about every indie band in the uk had been doing that since the late 80s. Other than that it's just some obvious strummed chords of folky rock in a lo FI style with a bit noise, some sounding like it was made up on the spot. Mixing rock and hip hop beats in 94 wasn't new. It does have a fun style though and features a classic track of the 90s. Also the lyrics are cool.

Lo-fi folk-rock, it makes you feel unease, and you aren´t sure what´s to come in the album, a dark album for the ages.

Inconsistent genius - for Loser and Beercan's Yin (as good as anything Beck's done) to the Yang of Truckdrivin' Neighbours and Sweet Sunshine. An intriguing (and rewarding in the main) listen nonetheless. 8/10 could have been 8.5 or 9 without those two tracks.

Once you get past the main single "Loser" you get a great collection of bizzaro tunes. I must be alone here in feeling while each song isn't perfect, I'd still argue that there are no bad songs on it, which makes very interesting to listen to. It's sporadic, trippy, and original. There aren't many albums out there that can really evoke the utter brilliance and madness that this album brings to me. Every time I listen to it I just feel happy, and isn't that what music is supposed to do?
