It's ok I guess. I do chuckle when I see the word genius associated with beck. What's genius here? Also apparently this is a highly original and innovative record. He threw a couple breaks under some tracks. Wow. Just about every indie band in the uk had been doing that since the late 80s. Other than that it's just some obvious strummed chords of folky rock in a lo FI style with a bit noise, some sounding like it was made up on the spot. Mixing rock and hip hop beats in 94 wasn't new. It does have a fun style though and features a classic track of the 90s. Also the lyrics are cool.

Lo-fi folk-rock, it makes you feel unease, and you aren´t sure what´s to come in the album, a dark album for the ages.

A stunning album from Beck and a worthy precursor to his masterpiece "Odelay". Beck manages to fuse genres like no other artist can on "Mellow Gold", and all of the tracks have diverse production, witty lyrics and great vocal delivery. Beck really is the essence of cool, and he's an artist that wasn't afraid to take risks even early on in his career.

Absolutely weird. An odd mix of very good songs (first three songs) and experimental tracks (interesting, but not always brilliant). The result is good, but I think it could have been better

Inconsistent genius - for Loser and Beercan's Yin (as good as anything Beck's done) to the Yang of Truckdrivin' Neighbours and Sweet Sunshine. An intriguing (and rewarding in the main) listen nonetheless. 8/10 could have been 8.5 or 9 without those two tracks.

Once you get past the main single "Loser" you get a great collection of bizzaro tunes. I must be alone here in feeling while each song isn't perfect, I'd still argue that there are no bad songs on it, which makes very interesting to listen to. It's sporadic, trippy, and original. There aren't many albums out there that can really evoke the utter brilliance and madness that this album brings to me. Every time I listen to it I just feel happy, and isn't that what music is supposed to do?

I just love this guy. Early signs of his genius. I was rockin to Loser in 4th Grade, but never really got into this album till I was much older. More Odelay... but in my opinion this was the genesis and encapsulates so much of his style... interesting that he had so much of it even in the beginning.

Slightly dated. In particular, Truckdrivin Neighbors and Sweet Sunshine feel like little more than bland filler.

Obviously you got the Loser bombshell going on, but there's alot more here. The last three tracks of the album get me moving, but I feel like there's something missing here that turns me off. Beck has always been one of a kind, and the experimentation is at an all time high here. Overall, not nearly as good as his later work though.
