It Hugs Back (the name usually appears in all lower-case, as "it hugs back") is a sort-of arty-trippy, somewhat noisy, and slightly spacey post-punkish band whose main guy, Matthew Simms, was tapped in late 2010 to replace B.C. Gilbert in Wire as their "FX guitarist." They kept making records though, including several Christmas singles and EPs, which they seemed to have a "thing" for. This is probably their best album, and while there are a few tracks here that are less than stellar, it's mostly high-quality material. Their decision to use a 15-minute jam, "The Big E," as the leadoff track here is, to put it charitably, somewhat dubious — but what can you do? It's an "E," and it's big, so it has to go first. That's how the music business works. You have to follow the rules.
