Alana Yorke is a fine indie-dreampop singer from Halifax, Nova Scotia who made headlines (at least in Canada) for having managed to record and release this album (her second) despite suffering a severe stroke in 2022 that required her to have open-brain surgery. That may be what the album title refers to, though she does seem to have recovered nicely if this album is any indication. (And let's face it, I could name several recording artists who have released albums without seeming to have any brain whatsoever.) Obviously the album cover is an homage to Bill Evans and Jim Hall's 1962 jazz classic "Undercurrent," but this is not jazz music; there's a fair amount of piano, but it's mostly upbeat electronic pop, a bit like Mitski but not quite as emotive. Also, she's no relation to Thom Yorke, Loula Yorke, or the New Yorke Dolles, so she should be fairly safe for non-hipsters to listen to.
