Let's Try It On and See What Fits, Sky. Intriguing enough start, missing from sparer folky-tronica to more luscious dance pop, it's predictably inconsistent but plenty charming, with only "Sad Dream" and "Everything Is Embarrasing" standing out as strokes of early genius.
This EP has an air of "let's throw everything at the wall and see what sticks", which is fine. Sky Ferreira was pretty young at the time of recording this and as an EP to help her find her way, it's a success. The country/folk ballads aren't handled that well, but the other three tracks (from heavy electropop to a grungy punch in the face to melancholic 80s synthpop) work surprisingly well, and she found her sound with the last two songs that she developed on "Night Time, My Time". Definitely worth checking out.
If you're looking for any form of cohesiveness then this isn't the EP for you. Instead it's released at a pivotal time in her career; a point in time where she's trying to find her niche, so she tackles several different genres head-on with varying results:
The guitarsy-folk of "sad dream", the dark electropop (which hearkens back to her previous work) of "lost in my bedroom", the country music of "ghost", the grungy-rock of "red lips" & the 80s alt-pop of "everything is embarrassing".
It all works quite well (except maybe the title track "Ghost"), but the standout is clearly "Everything is Embarrassing". It's a brilliant track on a really good EP.
