Very much the most underrated Springsteen album. This was a mature answer to all the success of BitUSA, a reckoning of the price of too much fame with some of the most introspective, personal tracks he's written, like Walk Like a Man, Two Faces and Brilliant Disguise. Spare Parts and Cautious Man stand with some of the best Springsteen narratives. So much to like here.

This album gets forgotten I think because his newer fans from Born In The USA didn't get it. Those of us who had been there from the start understood it all.

Coming after the commercialisation and world beating " Born in the " this album stripped the music back to basics, a trip through the darkness and love of Springsteen. Standing out form the pantheon " Tougher than the rest" is worthy of one of the singes of his career but you won't find it on any greatest hits package. Underrated,Brilliant, Heartbreaking
Simply one of the most honest confessionals ever put on record. Heartbreaking and real.

Bruce branches off his Americana pattern and writes about love and loss. Vulnerable and authentic, and underrated.
