This stands with Nebraska, Darkness, BTR and WIESS in the sense that every song is some degree of great. Really tough, heartbreaking album, but really great as an aid to moving on when something you thought was unbreakable falls apart.

10/10

Best Songs: Tougher Than the Rest, Walk Like A Man, Tunnel of Love, Brilliant Disguise, One Step Up, Valentine's Day

Very underrated Bruce. This is DEFINETLY better than the E street shuffle, the rising, and the river. In many respects this might be my favorite Bruce. It’s one i come back to over and over, though there is a few low points that bring into down a bit. The instrumentation(synths instead of guitars) is a wonderful change of pace and the lyrics are amazing. Some of his most relatable songs are on here like “one step up” and “when your alone”. When I’m going through hard times, this is an album I come to for support. Long live the boss!

Good album, quite different from everything he's done before. Introspective and sad, with synths replacing the guitars. His Blood On The Tracks, although not as good.

Brilliant Disguise and One Step Up are as good as anything he's ever done.

This is either my favorite album of his or the 80s are just so terrible that this sounds relatively amazing. Will have to revisit to know for sure.

This is my favourite Bruce Springsteen album. It's really the first Springsteen record that can be thought of as a solo LP. Springsteen had dumped the E street band after the mammoth born in the USA tour and it's difficult to hear what the E streeters could have done with these intimate acoustic tracks. It's a fantastic record about loneliness, heartache, and the yearning for something better. Springsteen himself, was at this time going through marriage problems, and had recently started an affair with his backing vocalist Patti Scialfa. In a way it's his blood on the tracks, his, face value. After the bombast of it's predecessor, tunnel of love, couldn't have started more differently, on opener, I ain't got you. Bruce opens the album singing a capella before an acoustic guitar kicks in. Brilliant disguise, is an excellent track, a genuine Springsteen classic. Other highlights are the beautiful, one step up, the lovely, tougher than the rest, and the moving closing cut, Valentine's day. There's some great characters here, including Bill Horton, who has love and fear tattooed on his knuckles, there's the confused protagonist of, two faces, and on spare parts, a young girl whose love of the party lights has been dampened by an unwanted teenage pregnancy. On, all that heaven will allow, there's the unfortunate guy who realises he's left his wallet in his working clothes, and can't afford to get into a club to meet his hot date. It's a wonderful album, and though Bruce would make many more records, he would never be as hopelessly romantic again. It's a Springsteen classic. Excellent.
