Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.9/100, a mean average of 65.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

There are a few really great tracks here, and some that could've been left off. One of the songs of the year was "One Week," a song that is fun to sing along with as any. Then "Alcohol," in which the Ladies tell us how much better their lives are now that they've discoverd alcohol. Doesn't everyone feel that way? Add "Never is Enough" and "Who Needs Sleep" and I see why I ranked this at #9 back in 1998.

Contains a few great songs. Am I the only one who thinks the cover art is pretty awful?

The Barenaked Ladies create another album doing what they do - cute clever catchy pop songs bracketed by awkward attempts to be serious. This is one of many decent albums by the boys, but it's not their best. Funny - it was this album that blew up in the USA. Gordon is better.
