While this is still an artist finding his groove, there is a ton of ambition in a few tracks, notably Red Army Blues, which begins with layered acoustic guitar and moves through a seven minute epic lyric. The title track closer is a beauty that completely prefigures everything he accomplished on the next album's Pan Within. Thrill is Gone is a gorgeous breakup song, a flipside to the angrier All the Things. (Edited)

quite ambitious and self-confident u2-esque debut release. the songs are full and exuberant, the lyrics sprawling. mike's voice is unique and appealing. at any rate a recommendable album. but most songs are a bit to long and without real surprises. and there are missing some "hits". all together a positive but also a bit boring listening experience. This album still sounds fresh some twenty years after its original release. It's worth owning just for the first two tracks, 'Don't Bang the Drum' and 'Whole of the Moon'! An excellent album. (Edited)
