It doesn't always matter to me what an artist's personal life story is. Sometimes a songwriter can tap very authentically into life experience that aren't his own and still own them in a way that feels genuine and believable and true. In the case of Ryan Bingham, though, he's really lived among the homeless and desperate and down and out, and he sings about those experiences in a way that feels very gritty and real. When he introduced "Western Shores" at a show I saw in Asheville, he implored his audience not to be cynical or unsympathetic toward teenagers who run away from home. "If they ran away," he said, "there's something they're running from." I've never forgotten that, and I remember it every time I hear this hard-rocking, hard-knocking, hard-won album.

A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
