Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.3/100, a mean average of 72.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.7.

One of the most underrated albums, even from DP fans: April is definitely one of the peaks of the band, in their whole dischography.

The third album and Deep Purple still trying to find the direction they want to go in. The Mk 1 lineup produced some really good stuff in parts but the first three albums highlighted tensions in the band over musical direction. I like all the tracks on this album but the whole is not greater than its parts. I always have a feeling of what might have been and not being wholly satisfied with what I've heard. But it is still one of the best albums of '69.

Thanks for the recommendation. Actually, I have listened to Concerto for Group and Orchestra before. Don't get me wrong.... I like it and it rocks very hard, but in my opinion it's nowhere near the same level emotionally. April speaks to me in a very deep and personal way.

HeavyChair, if you like the fusion between classical music and epic rock in April, you will certainly like their Concerto For Group and Orchestra, to me a very underrated fantastic mix between rock and classical music.

Yes April is definitely one of the most epic songs ever. Supper's ready might be epicer, but I can't think of anything else, really.

April means so much to me. I used to listen to it all the time with my best friend and we would just keep talking about how amazing it is. "Lalena" is also an amazing Donovan cover, and its just a really strong album all the way through. None of their other albums were nearly as good as this one, in my opinion.

Fantastic Mach 1 album! April is one of the most epic songs ever! It's my third favorite Deep Purple album. I'd consider it underrated for sure.

Also, not to be hateful to the other commenters, but in my opinion "Why Didn't Rosemary" and "Bird Has Flown" are definitely the weakest tracks on the album, but they're still pretty good.

By far the greatest deep purple album. This one is special to me. I remember listening to it for the first time on a sunny April day and being blown away. April is one of the best songs ever hands down. T.S. Eliot would be proud. Lalena is a really nice Donovan cover, as well.
