The Sailor is Mickey Newbury's ninth studio album. The unorthodox singer/songwriter/whistler had spent the 60s becoming a notable songwriter and starting his own singing career. The 70s found the artist solidifying his artistry, crafting intelligent thought-provoking lyrics that fit comfortably in the genres of classic pop, blues, country, R&B and gospel.

The Sailor is often overlooked because its glossy production and short running time. Yes, the production is kind of dated, but the presentation is purely classic pop (Blue Sky Shinin') and country (A Weed is a Weed). For a fellow who produced several dark songs (see Rusty Tracks) and slow mellow songs (see His Eye is On the Sparrow), The Sailor is probably the most happy and upbeat Newbury album.

The Sailor stands just above Newbury's weakest album, Rusty Tracks, but it is still very good. The songwriting content is genius as usual. I think many will critique the glossy production and lack of deeper cuts that appear on most Newbury albums.

Highlight: Blue Sky Shinin'
Gem: The Night You Wrote That Song
