Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.7/100, a mean average of 75.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.9.

The first half is excellent and the second half is only great. You can tell that Gord Downie is less involved in writing lyrics here. There are still some of the Hip's best stuff on this debut.

This is an unprecedented tour de force of Canadian rock that seemed to possess no antecedent. It has, however, not stood the test of time save for a handful of tracks, due to the catalogue of material that the Hip would build on top of this. Songs such as "New Orleans is Sinking" and "Boots or Hearts" are absolute classics, but some questionable material in the back half of Up to Here keep it from reaching the ranks of the Hip's later albums.

It's true. The Tragically Hip saved Canada from Corey Hart and Bryan Adams, paving the way for Sloan, Blue Rodeo, Big Sugar, and even Arcade Fire. Without them, we'd be stuck with Celine Dion and Nickleback.

In Canada, this is very comparable to Pearl Jam's Ten. Kids who grew up listening to tracks overplayed on the radio hate it. Those of us who were there when it came out remember very fondly how Gordo and company helped save rock and roll from the Brian Adamses of this world.
