Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Sebadoh is for me the top (see my different lists). I don't know why but a lot of Lou's songs strike a special chord.

Bakesale is probably regarded as their best or at least most known. It certainly is their most accessible. However, III and certainly Bubble & Scrape represent their greatest achievements. With three albums like those, more people should know who they are.

Given the reverence for Sonic Youth, Pavement and Husker Du, I don't understand how Sebadoh gets completely overlooked. I'm not saying they're as good (certainly not as good as the first 2), but they're worthy of mention.
