Gil Scott-Heron (1949–2011) was an American poet, musician, and activist. He is widely considered the "Godfather of Rap" for his fusion of spoken-word poetry with jazz and funk.
His work centered on the African American experience, politics, and social justice. He called himself a "bluesologist"—someone who studies the history and feeling of the blues.
