Winter
The Classical
Iceland
Hip Priest
Jawbone And The Air Rifle
Fortress/Deer Park
Just Step S'ways
Who Makes The Nazis
Widely regarded as the best Fall album, but not necessarily the one to try first for anyone curious enough to dive in. It doesn't have the more commercial appeal of the Brix influenced albums which followed. Although the word 'commercial' in Fall terms still vastly differs from most other band's definition of commercial.
The kick off of the Classical is a jolting, intense experience and it doesn't really ease up from there, culminating in the relentless And This Day, this is the one track here which I have never particularly cared for but everything else is well worth a listen. Garden
Smile
Eat Y'self Fitter
Hexen Definitive/Strife Knot
Hotel Bloedel
Neighbourhood Of Infinity
Tempo House
A little more gentle on the ear than the fire and brimstone of Hex, Brix's influence can be heard throughout adding a melodic touch to the preceedings. Garden is a particular favourite here, lyrically it baffles and impresses in equal measure like all the great Fall tracks. 'His veiled sex seeps through his management sloth' - there's also some great lines like this delivered in Hexen Definitive/Strife Knot which also gives us two songs for the price of one. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2014]
New Face In Hell
Container Drivers
English Scheme
Impression Of J Temperance
C'n'C Mitherings
The NWRA
Gramme Friday
A precurser to Hex from 1980, track for track it more or less equals anything in the Fall's cannon, except for the inevitable token out-there experimental track of WMC Blob 59 which doesn't really serve much purpose. There's wonderful wordplay in English Scheme and New Face In Hell, tales of Hitler on speed in Gramme Friday and very dark subject matter in Impression Of J Temperance which make this...well, just your typical Fall album I suppose, but one of their best. My New House
Paintwork
Barmy
I Am Damo Suzuki
Spoilt Victorian Child
Bombast
What You Need
The most highly regarded album by the Fall on this particular site, and this album does still have much to shout about, it is better for example than the further trio of Brix albums that followed it. However, in my opinion it cannot compete with the likes of Grotesque, Hex or Perverted By Language, the songs aren't quite as good.
As an album it is quite consistent but it doesn't have that one truly exceptional Fall track on it, it has about five tracks that are very good which is almost enough really. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2014]
Leave The Capital
Middle Mass
Prole Art Threat
Slates Slags Etc
Fit And Working Again
An Older Lover
With only six tracks this is more often than not regarded as just an EP but with no filler this makes for a wonderful mini LP featuring one of the best tracks in the Fall cannon in Leave The Capitol.
Also, worth a mention is Middle Mass which is supposedly about Marc Riley. Slates, Slags Etc is also a great MES rant, and Prole Art Threat hurdles along at breakneck pace. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2014]
Living Too Late
Gross Chapel - British Grenadiers
R.O.D
US 80's - 90's
Bournemouth Runner
Mr Pharmacist
Shoulder Pads
Riddler
In a similar vein to This Nations Saving Grace, Bend Sinister is probably their most commercial album, it is high on melody and has a indie-pop feeling to it.
Still plenty of lyrical gems can be found and things still venture off the beaten path as you would expect.
Included here is Mr Pharmacist which has been played live probably more than any other Fall track, but of course it isn't really a Fall track as it's a cover version. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2014]
Disney's Dream Debased
Lay Of The Land
Slang King
Stephen Song
Copped It
Craigness
Elves
Great album, quite a softer and more melodic approach than anything previous the Fall had done at this point.
Looking at the track listing now, I think it makes for a better collection with the various b-sides like No Bulbs and Draygo's Guilt included. For me, Disney's Dream Debased and Lay Of The Land are the two stand out tracks here. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2014]
Last Commands Of Xyralothep Via MES
Mountain Energei
Theme From Sparta FC
Proteinprotection
Janet, Johnny & James
Mike's Love Xexagon
Contraflow
Recovery Kit
Green Eyed Loco-Man
A startling return to form and their best LP at that point for 17 years, I cannot find any filler here, even the cover version Loop 41 which has to be the weakest track on offer has a certain charm to it. Theme From Sparta, Last Commands Of Xyralothep and Mountain Energei are all up there with the very best of the Fall. [First added to this chart: 06/29/2014]
Athlete Cured
Carry Bag Man
Bremen Nacht
The Steak Place
Victoria
Frenz
In These Times
Oswald Defence Lawyer
The Frenz Experiment was the first of a long run where the quality control was slightly neglected, but there were still enough great tracks here to outweigh the average ones.
Like many albums that followed, it could have been so much better, why include only a snippet of the brilliant Guest Informant instead of the full track? And for my money Bremen Nacht could have had about three or four minutes cut from the end. But these are just niggles and this was the time the Fall were having top forty hits with Victoria and There's A Ghost In My House, both covers of course, but I get the feeling MES would have felt the need to sabotage this kind of popularity. Dr Bucks' Letter
Two Librans
Cyber Insekt
W.B
Serum
Sons Of Temperance
Way Round
Devolute
Octo Realm/Ketamine Sun
Along with the Real New Fall LP this is another milestone of the '00's. The first five tracks are right on the money and as good a start as almost any other Fall album. Things do tend to tail off somewhat in the second half. But Dr Bucks' Letter is up there with Blindness and Theme From Sparta FC as one of the Fall's best tracks of this particular decade.
