Like so many albums out of Muscle Shoals, this is a group of great musicians led by a charismatic singer. In this case, it's a gospel-tinged nod to James Brown and Otis Redding, but packaged into what looks like an accountant. If there's a group of white dudes making better soul music, I haven't heard it.

Front-man Sam Herring combines Morrissey's swagger and Roland Gift's voice, and manages to do what so few synth-pop singers can: make me care about what he's singing. When the music is so heavy on synthesized sounds, the end result is often too light to take seriously. But his delivery is so engaging that I can't help but listen.
