Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 5% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 78.8/100, a mean average of 80.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.4/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 21.6.

Great songs, great playing, and a voice that's half Neil Young and half Christopher Cross.
Brings tears to my eyes, not because he's so emotional, but because he's so excellent. He seems to say there's no point in doing this unless you aim for the throat every time. Not arguing with anyone who says he's among the best songwriters ever.
If there's a best songwriter of all time it's probably him.
Love his voice. Love his story telling. Although he's a couple of years younger than me, we obviously had the same upbringing and his songs really hit home.
