From Kurtco
One of my favorite producers, Madlib, and one of the best gangsta rappers of his generation, Freddie Gibbs, collaborate on one of the best old school albums of the decade. We agree, "Piñata" does not represent a revolution in rap, we can even call this album nostalgic. Nostalgic of the time when we wore a pair of Jordans, where we did not have a cell phone and where Biggie was alive. But "Piñata" remains a very successful record, both in terms of production and performance of Freddie Gibbs. The duo works very well, even if listening to Piñata does not manage to forget the association of Madlib with DOOM on "Madvillainy", or Jaylib and his "Champion Sound". This album is perfect for fans of Madlib (like me) who will have the opportunity to put in the mouth of all new beats of the Loopdigga, but it will also satisfy listeners looking for a gangsta rap quality. As Gibbs himself says in opening of "Thuggin": "Niggas be like" Fred, you're not never lied ", Fuck the rap shit my gangsta been solidified, Still do my business on the side".

Gangster bars rapped over soulful production. Two hip hop artists from different lanes come together to create an amazing album.

Piñata is a unique blend of the best from both Gibbs and Madlib. Like most of Madlib's work, Piñata's production relies heavily on "old-school" soul samples. Gibbs has incredible chemistry with Madlib's beats and flows over them flawlessly. While comparable, I personally think it is a better album than Madlib/Doom's "Madvillainy".

Started to look into this mostly because of Madlib's involvement, never really listened to Gibbs stuff. But I really liked it, but that's because of Madlib's brilliance. As for Gibbs, I'll have to think about that since I never listened to his work.

Bandana is on the way... If it is even half as good as this then it'll be an instant cop.

Amazing production (of course) but sometimes Freddie's flows get a little predictable

As is often the case, Madlib's production elevates Gibbs to another level. The delivery and content of the lyrics could get old (and maybe they do, at times) but the production keeps me coming back. And I have to give Gibbs credit for packing a lot into each song. I hear a new knockout line every time I put this record on.

Never before has a piñata been so packed full of such quality treats... and you can't beat that with a bat!
