I love that this record embraced some of the sounds popular at the time (namely, synths and African percussion) but doesn't sound dated. He navigated the quirks of the 80s very well here.

I personally prefer their debut because I prefer the self-pitying lyrics to the social commentary offered here. But this is still a classic 80s album. Nothing else sounds quite like the Smiths.

This is R.E.M. in transition from independent to mainstream. It's the first album that sounds like what they would ultimately become. It lacks big hits, but it's solid all the way through.

Given that Phil Collins was releasing solo work at the same time as he was recording Genesis records, it was probably inevitable that the line between them would blur. Or maybe it was the 80s sound that was inevitable. Either way, this obviously does not sound like prog-era Genesis. But it's a great pop rock record all the same.
