Beyond a cult following partially amassed from post-hardcore roots within City of Caterpillar, Ghastly City Sleep remains under-appreciated and overlooked.
On their self-titled 2006 debut, the band set the template with a breathtaking dreamy post-rock soundscape. Then they ripped the template apart with Moondrifts. Their sophomore record found them shortening song lengths for something more direct but similarly atmospherically expansive. At times they were sounding like Radiohead at their most haunting and textured.
On their new double LP Lulling Skulls, Ghastly City Sleep continues to build off their past while relentlessly reinventing themselves. It’s sculpted within a palette of dark tones similar to Moondrifts, but where the mood of that album often felt desperate, frantic and paranoid, Lulling Skulls is far more meditative and contemplative.
It’s a sonic universe of their own creation. With each release, this universe becomes more detailed, more nuanced, more layered. The result is a listening experience that rewards with multiple listens. [First added to this chart: 02/16/2016]

Thanks! Yeah that Namychylak album is great. Still really trying to digest it. Love the mix of styles with the Tinariwen guys doing their thing. Definitely plan on checking out more soon.
