A somber textured opus. Loud City Song creates a serene environment that elevates the listener to the clouds, floating over a magnificent landscape.

Mark Kozelek teams up with Jimmy LaValle (The Album Leaf) for one of the best records of his long career. Minimal electron landscapes provide an unusual setting for Kozelek's songwriting, and yet everything seems to click into place perfectly. With "Gustavo" he unravels an epic display of storytelling. Humorous, heartwarming, detailed and thoughtful, it hits deep. "You Missed My Heart" may be my favorite Kozelek song in over a decade. His clever wordplay is at a peak. It's catchy, yet makes me tremble with sadness. This album is like the smarter, depressed older brother of Postal Service's "Give Up."

Dangerously feminine. This album has a sinister quality not unlike that of PJ Harvey. Hval lures with the seductive femininity of Kate Bush and Beth Gibbons, only to eviscerate the prey with the impeccable precision.

2013 was a year often dominated by dance grooves. Major releases by Daft Punk and Arcade Fire showed us that the world is ready to dance, but the bulk of the major new records lacked something vital. Luaka Bop’s release of obscure 70s electro-funker William Onyeabor reveals exactly what was missing. Soul.

A compilation of tracks from Parenthetical Girls previous string of EPs, Privilege is a lyrical treasure chest. As melodramatic as Morrissey, Parenthetical Girls instill pop music with a playful experimentalism and urgency.

Like a stereoscopic Nina Simone, Laura Mvula turns soulful jazz vocals into swirling pool of sound.

A return to minimalism in a time of maximalism. Following a series of albums that saw slowcore masters, Low, beef up their sound, The Invisible Way is in some ways a return to their minimal nature of their early work. But they're not simply retreating to the past. The Invisible Way includes of of the best songwriting of their careers, and the most Mimi Parker we've heard on any of their records. At the center of the album are the 1-2 punch of "Holy Ghost and "Waiting". Featuring sparse instrumental accompaniment, Parker's voice sends chills down your spine. Followed by Sparhawk doing the same thing.

This 2013 chart includes lots of really good albums, including a number of albums that just missed my year chart for 2013, probably because I didn't spend enough time with them to form a lasting impression--and that was because there were so many albums from 2013 that I really liked. Of all your selections, the one I'm happiest to see here is Once I Was an Eagle, which I think we'll look back on as Laura Marling's magnum opus, even if she continues making great albums for several more decades (which wouldn't surprise me at all). It is so hard-hitting, so well written and well performed--just a fantastic piece of work. The comparison to Joni Mitchell is interesting and, I think, apt. Glad to see it represented here.

A lot i haven't checked out yet (so I can't evaluate it), and we share about a 1/4 in common so I think that means we both need to be doing some work, eh? American Twilight from your chart has caught some interest from me so I'll have to check that one out immediately.

@Tekin I could see you digging the Crooks on Tape album, and most definitely Son Lux. The Yvette album is also rather incredible if you're in the mood for heavy post-punk
