Maybe the most unlikely of bands to be loved by the kids of today. Or not. There is nothing conventional about The Flaming Lips. They were formed in Oklahoma City…in 1983, and have been blazing trails ever since. They released their first album in 1986, and have been unstoppable since with fourteen studio albums to date plus the Fwends series. It’s one thing to see Wayne Coyne in a giant ball and cape onstage. It’s another to realize that he is actually older than I am. My freaking hero! Transmissions From The Satellite Heart is the Lips sixth album, and the band’s commercial breakthrough, thanks to having Beavis And Butt-Head feature the video for “She Don’t Use Jelly” on MTV a year later. “Turn It On” also became a hit, and the Lips were on their way to becoming the band of the cool kids for the next 20 years. This is their first masterpiece (if you love this, then you have to experience The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots), and it’s great for many reasons.
The songwriting on Satellite Heart is exceptional. The two hits are fine songs, but don’t sleep on excellent tracks like “Be My Head” and “Pilot Can At The Queer Of God”. The album is sonically beautiful, with huge dynamics and powerful sounds courtesy of massive guitars and drums (Steve Drozd is a monster!). More than anything else, though, is that this is the album where the Lips began to separate themselves from what everyone else was doing, and where they began marching to their own beat. They’ve been off the beaten path for over twenty years now, and they’ve survived it because they are really that good. The roots of what The Flaming Lips are today can be traced back to this album, with every exceptional moment an extension of what was begun here. This album is now sometimes forgotten (except for “She Don’t Use Jelly), but it deserves to be remembered for the classic it really is. And long live Wayne Coyne!
