Every once in a while, you'll hear a band on the radio and immediately know that they will end up being a one hit wonder. Escape Club, for instance. Crash Test Dummies is one of those bands. Their one big hit from their second album, the strangely Titled "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm", introduced rock to the sound of a true bass lead singer, Brad Roberts. They were different, which made them successful, and which made them obsolete very quickly. But this is actually a pretty great album. Every song is an adventure, and even though it got old on the radio, Roberts voice just makes everything sound...smarter. The songs are terrific..."Afternoons & Coffeespons", the title track, and everything else deserved a better fate than it got. Nobody had ever sounded like the Dummies...and no one has since. Thus, a unique band, and one worth hearing.
It didn't help matters that their next album was terrible. But in 1993, these guys were awfully good. The album is still cool today...although it's also long forgotten. [First added to this chart: 04/13/2012]

Produced by Butch Vig & Billy Corgan. They were hyped as "The Next Nirvana", and it almost killed them before they made their greatest music. But Siamese Dream is just that, and they somehow were able to live up to the hype. A mixture of grunge, shoegaze, psychedelic and metal, this album doesn't have a single boring moment on it. Written and recorded amid relationship breakdowns, drug addiction, depression and writers block, Siamese Dream is proof that the best music comes from the darkest of places.

Produced by Brendan O'Brien and Pearl Jam. This album debuted at number one and stayed there for five weeks...and Pearl Jam did absolutely zero promo work for it. That's how huge this band was in the early 90's. Tasked with trying to follow up their debut album Ten, Pearl Jam responded by making an album that was NOT Ten Part Two, but rather a strong collection of songs. This album has "Go", "Glorified G", "Daughter", "Rearviewmirror"...and it's unfortunately rarely given the credit for being simply a great album that it deserves.

On August And Everything After, the debut album from Counting Crows, we thought we were getting a new voice for a generation. “Mr. Jones” is a stunning sequel and homage to Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man”, and it’s a stunning piece of work. Singer Adam Duritz channels not only Dylan, but also Springsteen and Van Morrison in ways that few can dream of. Literal like Dylan, soulful like Van, and able to make long wordy phrases make musical sense like Bruce, Duritz seemed, for a moment, like the new literary rock hope. “Round Here”, a song from his previous band, and “Rain King” and “A Murder Of One” are exceptional tracks, giving the illusion that this was going to be one huge monster of a band and that Duritz was going to have one of those rare rock careers…but there were already cracks in the armor. But, for the moment, this was great stuff.
Helped by producer T-Bone Burnett, August And Everything After showcases all that is great about Counting Crows…and everything that has always kept them from the throne of truly great bands. While the band is capable, they have always taken a back seat to Duritz, never really stepping to the front as a unit. And Duritz, with all of his strengths, can be wildly inconsistent and overly wordy…and he often comes across as whiny. After this album, those weaknesses were always more evident, which is why this is the album by the Crows that you really should have. This is their most consistent set of songs, their strongest musically, and the best lyrics that Duritz has committed to record. They never worked with a better producer than Burnett, and they never had the fortune to be blessed with another song as magical as “Mr. Jones”. Still good…and almost great. The Afghan Whigs were always a bit too alternative to really catch on...which meant that they made some really great music that not a lot of people heard. Shame. Gentlemen, their best album, is an awesome rock document. "Debonair", "Be Sweet", "What Jail Is Like"...along with almost everything else makes this one of the 90's coolest albums.
The Whigs never matched the strange and catchy power of Gentlemen, but they released several more pretty good albums. This is the one to start with, and the one you will always come back to. [First added to this chart: 05/10/2012]

After the breakup of The Replacements, singer Paul Westerberg, an early influence for Kurt Cobain, released 14 Songs, his solo debut. It's a very cohesive and listenable album. "Knockin' On Mine" should have been a hit, but no one seemed to want Westerberg without the rest of The Replacements. There are acoustic songs and punk raves here, and the lyrics are great. Westerberg has been recording solo since, but his album sales still pale in comparison to his old band. 14 Songs is a treasure you probably haven't heard, and it's well worth a listen. Produced by Brian Paulson. One of the truly classic albums of alt-country. The last album by Uncle Tupelo is the culmination of Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy's journey to discover and reinvent country music, and the gems are endless. Anodyne should be alongside the great albums of the 90's. Maybe someday, alt-country will get its due. And when it does, this will be at the top of the heap. "Slate", "Acuff/Rose", "Give Back The Keys To My Heart"...every track here is perfection.

Produced by Steve Albini. The final Nirvana album is the place to point the band's many haters...this was a band that still had a lot of places to go, and that wasn't even close to tapping out their potential. A much darker disc than Nevermind, with different kinds of songs, but that magic that Kurt Cobain was able to bring to a song is all over In Utero. Don't hate Nirvana...embrace them for what they were: a really great rock band with a leader who had a special direction in his head.

The 1988 debut album from Hothouse Flowers is the most successful 1st effort in Irish history. They were discovered by Bono, and “Don’t Go” was a massive hit. Their second disc, Home, was also a big hit for them. Songs From The Rain was their third and final number one album in Ireland, and
marks their transition from being one of that country’s most promising bands to simply being bland and ordinary. It didn’t help that after touring for Songs From The Rain, the band took five years off. And that was pretty much the last gasp of fame for Hothouse Flowers. There was still hope for them in 1993, however, and there are some moments that flash to the enormous potential that they had shown earlier. But those moments were becoming fewer and fewer rather quickly.
The best track on Songs From The Rain is “Thing Of Beauty”, a fine pop song with layers of gospel vocals and a nifty guitar hook. “This Is It (Your Soul)” is not far behind, and “An Emotional Time” is very good. But there is also a lot of very bland music here…the songwriting from this band was beginning to flatline, and at times it’s almost painful to hear. In the end, Songs From The Rain is a sometimes pretty, and sometimes dull album that is, as a whole, average at best. They’ve made only three albums since this one, all of which are lacking great songwriting. The first two from this group are the ones to have. You might enjoy this one as well, but it’s not up to their earlier standard, and is pretty clearly the beginning of the end for a once very promising band. [First added to this chart: 11/06/2022]
