Top 100 Music Albums of 2019
by buzzdainer

2019 found me getting increasingly settled into life in Montana, a place I hope never to leave. Although social opportunities can be limited here for a 48-year-old single dude, the Gallatin Valley more than makes up for it with its spectacular mountains, its seemingly infinite networks of trails, its natural hot springs, its wild whitewater rivers, and its abundance of great microbreweries and music venues. I love the danger and exhiliration of living in a place with ever-present populations of grizzly bears and mountain lions that might eat you. When it comes to music, Montana artists have been finding their way into my playlists and charts, as are the bands that come to Montana for the summer music festivals and great music venues in White Sulphur Springs, Big Sky, Paradise Valley, Missoula, and Bozeman. I'm grateful to live in Big Sky country, and to have the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem right at my doorstep. But as you might guess from the emotional resonance of the albums I listened to most in 2019, there is loneliness, too, and a certain longing to share this beautiful place with others.

Back when I lived in Western North Carolina, there was a place called the Jordan Street Cafe in Brevard, North Carolina, where a group of friends and I would meet up. I wasn't exactly a regular, but it was the kind of place that had a warm and inviting feel, and I could count on running into friends just about every time I went. Singer/songwriter Tyler Ramsey used to play there solo sometimes, and at the time I thought highly of him as a singer, songwriter, and guitar player, and wondered how it was possible we had him all to ourselves in such a tiny venue. His songs reminded me of the North Carolina mountains I'd grown to love so much: the sound of water running over rock, the smell of galax and wet leaves, the way sunlight filtered down through the trees on an October afternoon. For the Morning possesses all these qualities, while also revealing the lyrical texture that's been added to his songwriting and performing as a result of spending years touring with indie folk band Band of Horses as their lead guitarist. "A Dream of Home," the highlight here, pulls all these elements together into one of the truly great songs of the 2010s. [First added to this chart: 09/07/2019]

J.S. Ondara grew up in Nairobi listening to American rock music, which made him something of an outsider in his native Kenya. He moved to the United States in 2013 at the age of twenty, and chose Minnesota as the place where he would settle, in large part, because it's Bob Dylan's home state. That should give you at least a basic reference for the style of acoustic folk music Ondara makes, although what makes his music so special is the unique perspective on the American experience his lyrics have to offer. He is neither wide-eyed idealist nor hardened cynic, but someone who clearly sees to the heart of the great American paradox: its incredible promise balanced by its moral failings. His songs are beautiful, refreshing, haunting, deeply moving. I've never heard a folk album quite like one, and it might be a very long time before I hear another one this good. Thank you for leading me to the very talented J.S. Ondara. He is about to occupy a few of my charts.
