I was prepared not to love this album, as I'd been a little underwhelmed by Josh Ritter's previous few releases. But he rediscovered his form on this one, in part thanks to the influence of Jason Isbell, who both produced and played on this album, as well as sharing a few of his bandmates from the 400 Unit to form Ritter's backing band. Josh Ritter's impeccable Americana folk storytelling is as mature and strong as ever, and there's a rejuvenated energy to the performances here that felt absent on his past few albums. I'm especially fond of "A New Man," which feels especially prescient during a time when we all must learn to reinvent ourselves and become better versions of ourselves to accommodate a rapidly changing, increasingly ugly political and cultural environment.
