A return to conventional song format, but retaining some of the experimental approach pioneered in Low/Heroes/Lodger by harnessing the dissonance of Robert Fripps guitar. Once again Bowie demonstrates that artistic originality and commercialism are not necessarily incompatible.

Bowie embraces a classy pop commercialism by working with Nile Rodgers. Not universally admired by the Bowie faithful, the truth is that this is a world class commercial pop album that would catapult him to mainstream superstardom - but he would spend the next ten years trying to get back to where he came from.

Desperately trying to rekindle his mojo following the sub-standard 'Tonight' and 'Never Let Me Down', Bowie assembled this gnarly alternative rock outfit. The critical mauling Tin Machine received was really something to behold, dismissed as a manifestation of Bowie's mid-life crisis, the band was never taken seriously. In truth, it wasn't that bad (except the destruction of Lennon's 'Working Class Hero' - which was very bad). Gabrels' guitar work was always innovative and for the first time since '83, David sounded like he was enjoying himself.

Most 80s pop artists would’ve been pleased with an album containing a solid international hit in ‘Blue Jean’ as well 2 minor hits (including the rather good ‘Loving the Alien’). But Bowie was still striving to square-up pop mega-stardom with his instinctive attraction to the alternative - whilst also struggling with a chronic drug addiction. As a result, ‘Tonight’ is mostly uninspired – and at its worst a pile of garbage.

Still trapped trying to please a mass audience he didn't understand or care about, ‘Never Let Me Down’ represents the low point in Bowie's 80s slump. The songs are all drowned in the digital dirge popular at the time, complete with the mandatory heavy snare backbeat. The Bowie style rarely manages to shine through the dirge and the whole thing is an uncomfortable listen for Bowie fans as he flounders in areas he really shouldn't be.

I love the fact that you've put Earthling so high up in this chart. It got a massive panning in the music press when it came out, but I really love that album.
