Top 17 Music Albums of 1986
by Junomoogmello

This chart is under construction with music only being added as albums are re-listened to, (some for the first time in years!) that way comments will be fresh. I will only be commenting on albums which I own on vinyl, CD or tape, not music which I can all too easily get by other means but never really own. In my humble view, digital formats have helped kill the record industry and the way music should sound...

The Final
Compilation
If I had to name the album which most encapsulates the worderful feeling of lying on a sunbed with a swimming pool within throwing distance and waves washing onto sparkling sand within earshot, a cold beer sat at my side and the smell of Piz Buin sun cream on the warm breeze, then it is this album. Ok, not including Last Christmas in the above statement as that is one of my favourite Christmas songs, this album is pure summer, with tracks like Club Tropicana, Battlestations and Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, it is a very happy, upbeat album. I could play this in the car all through the summer! [First added to this chart: 03/28/2021]

From the moment the needle is dropped into the first groove of track one side one the feel good factor of this album is 100%. The scene this music paints for me is of warm summers, lazing on a sandy beach as the crowds leave and the sun starts to dip, the aroma of sun cream, the scent of freshly cut grass, an ice cold beer while turning the skewers over the charcoal. The delicious feeling of cold silk sheets after a day on a sun soaked beach. And that's just side 1! Jazz fusion with a hint of rock and some. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2020]

This is a superb album. I still have the tape which sadly no longer plays that well due to the endless play back in the late eighties when my car had a thing called a cassette player! I have just ordered a second hand vinyl copy from eBay so fingers crossed it will play as advertised. The production on this album was excellent even when listening via tape so I am excited to hear what the vinyl will deliver. The music on this album encourages you to sing along, tracks like 'Swallowed by the Cracks', A Rock For the Fotgotten' and 'All Alone in the Big City'. I always thought there was a mystique about the album too, that there is some hidden theme or message, perhaps when I re-listen to the whole album with age and wisdom on my side it will become apparent. Edit comment This is a favourite mid eighties synth pop/rock album of mine. Several of the tracks sit in my summer music mix and in my gym workout playlists. 'Died in Your Arms' is a personal favourite. There are no tracks which I don't like, in fact I want to get this on vinyl if I can get hold of a mint copy.

And so on 7/3/19 I happily laid the near mint recently purchased vinyl onto the platter. Definitely worth waiting for, the vinyl is much richer and provides an even better listening experience than the CD and tape versions I have. Enough for me up the rating to 85! Note the artwork shown on BEA for this album cover is possibly a later version. The original was much more interesting.

An excellent 80's synth pop/rock album. It is only now (32 years after its release) that I realise what great musicians these guys were. The standout track is my all time favourite Spandau Ballet track, 'Through the Barricades'. Who would have thought Tony Hadley would end up in the Jungle and Martin Kemp on Eastenders! These guys were Gods in their heyday... [First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]

I saw Chris De Burgh at the Cornwall Coliseum at the peak of his musical career, which was the release of this album in my opinion. I still have the tape which was played to the point of almost snapping, this was when having a tape player in a car was the buis! Although 'Lady in Red' was played to death on the radio and in nightclubs, it isn't actually the best track on the album. There are several better ones including 'Fire on the Water', 'Say Goodbye To It All' and 'Fatal Hesitation'. A very uplifting listen. And by way of this sentence, I am updating this comment above (26/11/18) to add that having picked up an excellent copy on vinyl, the album production is superb with every instrument set clearly and just right in the mix. Fantastic album bringing back lots of happy late teen memories! [First added to this chart: 03/17/2021]

This is a superb album by Chris Rea. The title track is one of my all time 'summer feel' songs and immediately takes me to all those wonderful summer sights, sounds and aromas, in fact it sits high in my summer music playlist. Great vocals and musicianship throughout with a really good track to track flow. 'Two Roads' and 'Light of Hope' are other personal favourite, the latter is a beautiful ballad with harp like guitar and subtle electric piano. [First added to this chart: 02/26/2022]

It's worth having this album for the opener alone, superb! Electric drums being worked to the max, lead guitar soloing (which could sit in a metal band) and thumping bass. This is a very 'Rock' lp in my opinion, less new wave, these guys were great musicians and the vocal delivery is excellent. The album is riddled with Fairlight textures which I love. Timeless. This is a hidden gem from the mid eighties. Ok, all the songs are love songs in a roundabout sort of way but they are upbeat and happy. There is some excellent musicianship on the album and the drums are delivered with punch, possibly from a Simmons or D Drum electric kit. Lovely subtle string textures with complimentary rhythm guitar and electric bass provide the foundations for some great vocals throughout the album. The erotic cover held a certain mystique to a spotty teenager discovering music! [First added to this chart: 10/11/2020]

Superb 'modern' jazz. If any man can make a sax talk then this man can! Imagine if Hendrix could play a sax then put that in a tumble drier with a sprinkling of John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck. [First added to this chart: 09/21/2020]
