One of my favourite albums of all time, from the iconic album cover to the guitar swan song of all time. When I read that some people consider this overrated it is worth considering its age and the fact that when it came out in 1971 it would have been era and genre defining. Apart from the obvious 'Stairway to Heaven', 'Rock and Roll' and 'When the Levee Breaks' are personal favourites.[First added to this chart: 10/04/2020]
In September 2019, I gave my intitial rating on this prog masterpiece, stating (more hoping) the vinyl re-issue would become a reality. And so here we are, I have at last got a copy (well two actually given the cult status and rarity of the original). I put this album on a parallel to Close to the Edge, In the Court of the Crimson King and Selling England by the Pound. With dark parts like tar and light parts like moon dust, the album is an amazing audio journey, Plague of Lighhouse Keepers may well be the best prog track in history.
Very possibly the best prog rock album cover ever! I am so happy that having owned this on CD for a couple of years I fortunately picked up the vinyl version during the recent HMV vinyl week. How times change, thirty years ago I was happy to replace vinyl with CD's![First added to this chart: 09/05/2021]
I had never heard this album unti this morning. Sitting in my dining room with a strong black coffee listening to a new vinyl on a colld winters Sunday morning is a pleasure indeed, particularly when the quality of instrumentation and production is as good as this! What a debut album this was for Yes. You can pick out every instrument clearly and they all sit just right in the mix. The lead guitar exit at the end of track 1 is superb. Favourite tracks are 'Starship Trooper' and 'Yours is no Digrace' No fillers on this album.[First added to this chart: 08/30/2021]
This is an amazing prog album. Echoes is a masterclass of progressive rock from the opening sampled piano key which sounds like a submarine sonar to the amazing David Gilmour guitar soloing. The one track lets the album down is the dreaded seamus. Were the guys really so stuck for ideas that they had to have a bloody dog howling along to some pretty lousy acoustic blues? This track, totally should not have made it to an album![First added to this chart: 04/07/2022]
A more melodic and intelligent sounding Black Sabbath with hints towards early Rush. Raw but powerful rock, sounds excellent on vinyl. The track titles suggest they didn't take themselves too seriously which is perhaps why they didn't reach the heights of BS. I like the fact that really heavy riffery can be followed up by dreamy almost whimsical pieces. The first two tracks fit this bill well.[First added to this chart: 09/20/2020]
Excellent psychedelic album by The Beach Boys where the approach feels more mature and deeper than some other works. Many good tracks including the opener and title track.[First added to this chart: 07/28/2020]
A great album by the Fairies and one which is becoming quite sought after looking at some of the prices on eBay and Discogs. A sort of meld of psychedelia, acid rock and Hawkwind esque space rock. Top tracks are 'Do It' , 'War Girl' and 'Never Never Land'. The album production isn't the best, sounds like it was recorded in my greenhouse but that is made up for by some classic tracks. If you like Hawkwind, Gong et al then you will like this.[First added to this chart: 02/19/2021]
This is a really great progressive album. Great sleeve art too! An album which will deliver more with each repeated listen.[First added to this chart: 09/04/2021]
Definitely agree that this is one of the top live albums of all time. A great mixture of blues, tilting it's hat towards jazz. Some absolutely blistering guitar work on this album. Many think that Skynyrd laid the foundations for Southern Rock. This albums definitely proves that not to be the case.[First added to this chart: 04/16/2022]
