I see Crimson has quoted me as saying without Brian the Beach boys were "nothing". Where did I say that? That doesn't appear anywhere in my comment. My initial reason for the comment was Crimson's outrageous claim that the Beach boys, and this is a quote, were "much, much better than the Beatles". Sorry, not having that. By the way, I still don't quite understand your most recent comment and your spelling isn't great either.

To garycottier. Yhea, maybe without Brian they were "nothing" -actualy they were pretty goddam good even without him-, but they had Brian. You can't say "meh, without Lennon/McCarthey the Beatles were nothing". They had Lennon/McCarthey.

The Beach boys were a good group but to say they were better than the Beatles(as member Crimson claims) is just insane. Without Brian Wilson they were really not much more than a glorified vocal group. I mean, come on, a real band doesn't need a bunch of session musicians to play the backing tracks. After Brian lost it late '66/early '67, the band lost all focus. Their albums after, Pet sounds, are all messy affairs, with all sorts of songs from all sorts of places thrown in to make up the running time. The best Beach boys lyrics are written by outsiders like Tony Asher and Jack Rieley, forget Mike Love, he's okay when he's singing about surf boards and hamburger stands, but he's hardly Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen, let alone Lennon, McCartney or even Harrison. As for Brian Wilson, the last great song he wrote was, ' Til I die, and that came out on the 1971 album, Surf's up, 45 years ago. The problem with Brian is he's always been too light, too fluffy and too safe, he really needed a foil like a Lennon to keep him away from anything too schmaltzy, but unfortunately he was mainly encouraged towards this territory by his bandmates rather than deterred from it. The Beach boys were a good group, not a good band, and even though i'm a fan, i would never seriously compare them with the Beatles. Yes, Pet sounds, is extraordinary, one of the greatest albums ever made and up there with, Sgt. Pepper, but the rest is just too inconsistent, too patchy, and though the, Smile, album is good, it's not quite the masterpiece some claim, although it could have been if it had been finished properly. Still, Friends, Today, and, Surf's up, are good albums, but they're hardly, Rubber soul, Revolver, or, Abbey road. As for their eighties albums, well, let's not even go there, let alone their nineties efforts. They've basically been out of their depth since the late sixties and are probably the most unhip band out of all the rock'n'roll legends desperately trying to remain commercially successful with the usual terrible results usually instigated by Mike Love(the Fat boys, anyone?). Having said all that, I like the band/group, and each to his own, but although the Beach boys may be your favourite band, you cannot say they are better than the Beatles. They're not.

Besides from Pet Sounds, they are massively underrated. Much, much, better than the Beatles. One of the best, or the best, bands of all time.

The rise and downfall of Brian Wilson and the whole production era of 1966-1968 really gives me the creeps in the best way. It's really crazy how differently music history would've gone if they'd released Smile in 1967, especially considering how some Beatles albums have been considered a reaction to them. They were still strong through the 70s in my opinion and their 2012 comeback is great. Deceptively deep and complex, which I guess is a beautiful thing. It's art under the guise of simplicity

It really does upset me how underrated The Beach Boys are compared to say, The Beatles, despite the fact that they are easily on a par with them, if not (in my opinion) even better. The issue seems to be that most people judge them by their early singles (e.g. Surfin USA, I Get Around etc.); good as they are, the majority of the Boys' best work is to be found later on in their career in the 1970s (Sunflower, Surf's Up, Holland), with incredibly beautiful and brilliant songs such as Surf's Up, The Trader, Till I Die and All I Wanna Do. Unfortunately, these albums go mostly overlooked, and The Beach Boys continue to be judged by their early work (you wouldn't judge The Beatles on Please Please Me alone!!) Don't make the same mistake and don't underestimate this fantastic band - perhaps the best ever! Get listening :) x

Pet Sounds and Smile (Brian Wilson's version released in the 2000s) are pretty good, but Beach Boys are bit overrated for me. Most of their stuff is pretty lame. Either just bad or poppy boy band stuff. They had some really cool arrangements due to Brian Wilson, some solid harmonies and the such, but I would rank them a bit lower as a band. They would probably make my top 100, not top 20.

Brian Wilson is a pure genius. Essential albums is Pet Sounds, Surf's Up, Friends and Smile Sessions. Dennis Wilson i kinda underrated. He wrote "Forever" and "Slip in through" for example. Those tracks are awesome. Carl Wilson best track is "Long Promised Road".

They are one of the greatest bands of all time. Everyone who only listened to Pet Sounds needs to check out their other records. Even though they might be not as good (bar The SMile Sessions) there is a lot of wonderful music to discover.

Recommended albums: Pet Sounds, The SMile Sessions, Love You, Today!, Friends, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Summer Days (And Summer Nights), Wild Honey, Holland
