Top 21 Music Albums of 1983
by Junomoogmello
This chart is under construction with albums being added as re-listened to, so that comments fit 'today' and perhaps not how I felt about an album when it first came out. Only music which I own on vinyl, tape or CD is added. No digital format listening is included. The digital, format has killed the music industry. Bands used to gig to promote new albums and there was a real excitement in seeing a live band on an album promotion tour.

An excellent metal album which I have gotten into more with repeated listens. 'Holy Diver' and 'Don't Talk to Strangers' are awesome metal tracks, in fact the latter is one of my all time favourite metal tracks. A very underrated metal classic. One of my top five metal albums in fact.

I Saw Robert Plant on tour in the eighties at the Cornwall Coliseum. Brings back lots of happy memories, love the synth work on 'Big Log' and 'In the Mood' I Think Phil Collins was sat behind the drums when I saw them which was an added bonus. Superb concert and great album.

In my opinion there are two Marillion's and they are both quite different yet I like them both in equal measure for different reasons. The early Fish led era was as progressive as early Genesis and this album in particular is a prog masterpiece that seems to slip under the radar of most prog album reviews. The title track and 'Forgotten Sons' are up there with 'Watcher Of The Skies' and 'Suppers Ready'. The album artwork is equally up there with some of the top prog album covers of all time so on this basis, coupled with the musicianship, lyrics and vocals, my score can be nothing other than high!

A great eighties synth pop rock album which exudes sunshine. There are several classic hits on this album and some less known treasures. Club Tropicana, Bad Boys and Wham Rap are the standouts.

The best of China Crisis output, closely followed by 'Flaunt the Imperfection'. China Crisis had quite a unique sound which was no doubt a result of mixing trumpets and saxaphones into their electric sound. They also used quite a clean guitar sound which married with the punchy electric drums and carefully chosen synth patches, which seem to lean more towards percussive sounds than strings. 'Wishful Thinking' and 'Tragedy and Mystery' are personal favourites.

Probably the cheeriest album in my collection, the title track always puts a smile on my face. To be honest, until recently, I only knew Men At Work for 'Down Under'. As with many eighties bands, musically underrated and eroded by the sands of time. Great interesting cover art too!

I don't know why it has taken me so long to buy this and am really glad I have, particularly as the vinyl re-issue is on tri-colour vinyl! The album has a vey eighties almost synth rock feel to it which I really like. From the opening track with its heavily processed electric drum and guitar sounds you know that this isn't going to be 'progressive' but in 1983 should it have been anyway? All things have to change in time and Genesis had already done a similar thing three years earlier with 'Duke', i.e. taking a more commercial and radio friendly approach. In summary, a great album!

A haunting album with beautiful vocal harmonies, particularly on the opening track. I saw Clannad live back in the eighties and the wall of sound they created was fantastic. I've recently picked up an excellent condition vinyl at a record fair and now I want to get hold of Macalla on vinyl too.

A great eighties synth pop album with a really 'summery' feel to it. In my opinion, this is the best of the top three with 'How Men Are' in second and 'Penthouse and Pavement' in third place. 'Temptation' and 'Come Live With Me' are standouts. 'Best Kept Secret' with its subtle synth washes and up front vocals also ticks the box for me.

Coming to this album forty years after its release, it is classic eighties synth pop. My interest in this band being ignited by my love of eighties synth pop/rock and in seeing a Kajagoogoo flight case to the side of the stage at a Steve Hackett gig a few years ago. Nick Beggs is an incredible bass player, he also played Chapman Stick at that gig which was quite a fascinating thing to watch. To have picked this up on vinyl in near mint condition 40 years after it’s release has made me very happy. ‘Hang on Now’ and ‘Too Shy’ make the album a worthwhile buy alone.
