Marillion are truly a one-of-a-kind band. In their 30-plus year career, they've not only managed to evolve creatively (with nary a weak track over 16 studio albums) but have managed to do so while bucking the industry (the "Marillion model" has seen them become possibly the world's biggest cult act) and maintaining their integrity.
Pretty much agree with Robert. The Fish era and the first Hogarth album are all classics. After that, it's kind of hit or miss. They were kinda Genesis clones (much like Muse sounded a lot like Radiohead for a while) but with a 80s alternative flavor. Still great though :)

I loved Marillion with Fish. With someone else on lead vocals, I think they pulled through with Season's End but after that it became way too pop for me.

Ruined by an ex-brother in law, who incessantly preached the superiority of Marillion and constantly doodled their guitar parts on his unplugged Fender. I've tried to be a better person and judge this band for their merits, but I can't shake the association.

I'd put to Fish-Marillion 95, to Hogarth-Marillion - 65. Listen to Fish-Marillion, folks. Especially Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws.
