David Bowie Ranked by mjp11

Recently finished listening to David Bowie's entire discography. This was a really fun experience and one I've been meaning to do for a while. I've always said that Bowie is one of my favorite artists but it felt a little hypocritical having only listened to his "best" albums. Now I've experienced the full scope of his music and can confidently say David Bowie is one of the most interesting and exciting artists of all time. Even his weaker albums were stepping stones to something greater. There were so many amazing songs and ideas that blew me away. I was missing out on so much. My only wish now was that there were more albums for me to listen to.

Most of this list is based off of my first impressions. It is in no way definitive and will change as I go back and relisten to these records. I've tried to make note of which albums I have listened to multiple times and which ones are new for me.

Amazing first half. Great but lesser second half. I love the journey this album takes me on. Such a weird, whimsical vibe throughout. I dig it. Part of me wants to place this even higher but this seems like a fair spot. It's just a slight step below his best work. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2022]

The middle of this album drags it down a bit for me. The opening three songs mark one of the best starts to a Bowie album so it's unfortunate most of the rest of the album doesn't measure up. No bad songs but it never matches the energy of those first three. Criminal World and Cat People are the best off the second half. Overall solid album that has grown on me a bit, despite its flaws. A fresher sound than his two solo albums before this, Tin Machine is a fun time but feels half-baked. Forgettable lyrics, loose song-structures, and so-so vocals from Bowie hold it back quite a bit. Production isn't doing it any favors either, at least Never Let Me Down had the recent remaster. I will say, the rough mix has a bit of a proto-grunge charm. The vocals could be mixed better even so. The lows for this album aren't super low but the highs are unremarkable. Middle of the road in terms of Bowie's 80s solo work, weak compared to the rest of his discography. More enjoyable than his debut but it's a similar case to pin ups where the cover songs just aren't as strong as the original recordings. The new songs are good and slightly make up for it, Loving the Alien especially is another outstanding opener. It's enjoyable, but the fact that most of the songs are covers it's hard to call this essential listening. I'll never understand how Bowie managed to absolutely butcher one of the greatest songs ever written. Luckily none of the other cover songs are nearly as bad as God Only Knows. While none of the songs are as bad as its reputation led me to believe, Never Let Me Down is one of the weakest Bowie albums I've listened to. There are some great ideas and sounds but nothing cohesive. The flow between songs is awkward. Bowie's vocals are fine and the production is clean (in the 2018 version at least). No real complaints there. The problem is that none of the songs feel worth returning to. Even Tonight and Bowie's debut had a few standout tracks. I do appreciate that there's only one cover, an improvement from Tonight. Bang Bang is also actually one of his better cover songs ironically. (Based on the 2018 remaster, I might go listen to the original mix at some point but for now I'll move on to Bowie's next album) [First added to this chart: 12/16/2024]
