This record, The Zug, has a hidden charm in making indie rock and pop music through a lo-fi blender of psychedelia. Yves' musical vision is rich and there certainly is a lot to come for. Although some of the ideas falls short of greatness, it is not to be denied that the way the instrumentation flows through the album feels very special, and the lo-fi incorporated aesthetic throughout all the songs makes it one of 2022's most charming records. The middle part is the highlight of the album, a rarity for records in general, espceially these days. Synthetically, sometimes it feels like 60s psychedelic rock and jazz rock but through a late 2000s-early 2010s lens that is both Bedroom Pop and Hypnagogic Pop - without actually directly sounded like it. The Zug has a very neat sphere, nothing is too out there (the feel is pretty much like an urban city where the grey sky is everywhere yet it keeps it at about 25-35 degrees celsius) and Yves probably listened to a lot of Zappa and Canterbury Scene mixed with the latest indie trends; if you pay attention to the synths (even the drums) it stays away from being too soulful, and moreso is very simple in its twistedness. Everything lies in how it is engineered. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
Ignore track #4 and #5, and you have right here an undisputed playing of thundery drums, striking guitars and borderline impeccable composition on a only somewhat fine production value. These tracks are dramatic and prestine with it. And they are also so outstanding with how they incorporate interdimensional, spiritual classical music into their dooming thrashy metal music. Another reason why Black Metal is my favorite metal genre. [First added to this chart: 11/29/2022]
Very straightforward psychedelic rock album, dozens of those get released every year. It's a varied little project, and while half of the listen is something we've heard before, the Sadies are better players than songwriters. Case in point, Cut Up High And Dry, it's a tune (an underwritten one) everybody has heard hundreds of times guaranteed, but the banjo sprinkling and drum rhythm is really cool. They fail at making enthralling noisy indie rock on Ginger Moon and Better Yet, maybe last-mentioned's the only legitimate deficient song. Rest in peace to Dallas Good, making the oracular and cinematic instrumental closer End Credits the by far most hardhitting 3 minutes (even more so that you don't hear him sing: he's gone...)
A mixture of Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl and Panda Bear's Person Pitch is driving Stop And Start in a twist. All The Good lacks convincing vocal-performance, So Far For So Few lacks bite and the 2 minute Who-esque interlude You Should Be Worried lacks longevity. More Alone also features a decent riff, but here it's the lyrics that shine, it feels tragic hearing "I feel more alone" on a posthumous release. The songs with a melody most purposeful are Message To Belial (with doses of the Byrds) and No One's Listening (rabid alt-rock with an awesome punk-inspired riff that could compete with the Kinks).
Derivative? Yes. Enjoyable? Also yes. [First added to this chart: 11/28/2022]
Wonderful LP with classical elements and natural orchestrations with an old soul. Nothing you haven't heard before and some moments can get a little TV-commercial like but overall it is a pleasureful record that has unconditional power. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
Oh yeah, what I have been sorta looking for in metal; people playing simple but effective riffs, a singer that not only doesn't suck but also fits the aesthetic of the songs and give them more purpose, and catchy tunes. Thank you Maule, go chicken!
Okay, points off for being satanic and kind of repetitive and not living up to the hype banger of the first track but still, pretty cool stuff, and really cool stuff for metalheads/AOR-fans out there. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
Woah this starts out good with some avant-garde jazz. Then it gets even greater when it gets freaky. Yet the last few cuts gives in to insufferable jazz-noise that not only pales in comparison to how Water & Tools starts, but feels disrespectful being on the same disc. This was so close to breaking the top 50. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
This feels like a typical semi-commercially successful pop-rock emo grunge typea band from the 2000s with a sharp production, but the fact that these joints are charmingly well-written really does it all a favor. Yeah man I do enjoy it. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
Spaciest album of 2022. On good and bad. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2022]
