How could this possibly go wrong? The answer is, it couldn’t. Recorded live in Jason Isbell’s home state of Alabama, and with enough great material to choose from to make a great double album, this does not disappoint at all. Recorded over two nights in Birmingham and Huntsville, this is everything you’d want from an Isbell show. With a nice handful of tracks from his tenure with Drive-By Truckers augmenting his always improving solo work, Isbell turns in a soulful and powerful performance. And at times, he even eclipses the original recordings. “Decoration Day” is a perfect example of that…this is a stronger and all around better version than the studio version, and you’ll find that many of these tracks compare favorably with their original brethren. And when you can do that, you’ve got yourself the main ingredient for a fine live album. And, as usual, Isbell delivers in fine, fine fashion. All across the board.

A couple of covers stand out here. “Heart On A String” was originally recorded by Candy Staton in the early 70’s, and Isbell gives it a fine and soulful reading. “Like A Hurricane” is the Neil Young song, and it works as a rousing closer. The Truckers tracks, “Decoration Day”. “Goddamn Lonely Love”, “Outfit”, and “Danko / Manuel”, even with it’s odd start without guitars, all work well, and “TVA” is a gem as well…recorded by the Truckers but only released on the later compilation The Fine Print…it’s a nice surprise. The rest are tracks from his first three solo albums, Sirens Of The Ditch, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, and Here We Rest. All are excellent, and if you know anything about Isbell as a writer, you’ll know that none of the material is second rate. In short, Live From Alabama is everything you could want from a Jason Isbell show. One of the finest live albums in recent years, and a must have companion for fans of one of our greatest current songwriters.

2012 – DEF JAM

Frank Ocean’s time in the music industry began as a ghostwriter…meaning that other people would be given credit for songs he wrote. He was later signed as a solo artist to Def Jam Records, but was finding it frustrating that they seemed to have little interest in recording him. So he did it on his own, releasing a mixtape in 2011 that gave him a hit, and his label put him in the studio the next year. The result is his debut album, Channel Orange. This was an album that caught me off guard. How can it be so great if I’ve never heard of it? Turns out I was simply missing out. For starters, this guy can sing. Really sing. But he doesn’t OVER sing. There aren’t the vocal gymnastics here that you get from so much R&B. He sings these songs straight, and the songs are really well written and played with the way R&B should be played.

This album is modern, and it’s one that may take some time to get into…but once you do, the rewards are pretty phenomenal. There are some truly great tracks here: “Super Rich Kids”, “Pyramids”, “Thinkin’ Bout You”, “Sierra Leone”…all perfectly performed and wonderfully creative. Give Channel Orange a chance, and you will not regret it. One of the better R&B albums from recent years that you will hear. Ocean did not have a good relationship with Def Jam, and he left the label after an instrumental album in 2016…after which he finally released the long awaited follow up to Channel Orange with Blonde. His short career has revealed an artist with a solid and righteous grasp on R&B, and he’s someone to watch for new music from. In the meantime, check out Channel Orange. Give it a few listens, and you’ll be happy you did.

Alt-J (often identified by the symbol ∆), is a band that was formed at Leeds University in 2007. Their name suggests something of a more electronic nature, and their sound does as well…but this group is more rock in nature than that. It’s also more everything else. An Awesome Wave is their debut album, released after the members had left school. You’ll find lots of different elements to keep you happy here…plenty of guitar, along with some nice hip hop beats. Great sounding keyboards, and intriguing vocals to go along with a great set of lyrics. Alt-J shows that right out of the gate, they were not afraid to put it all out there on their sleeves and be just who they are. And it works magnificently. An Awesome Wave is a breathtaking work. Sonically, musically, lyrically, this is an album that has something for everyone, and it’s all done extremely well.

“Breezeblocks”, “Matilda”, “Tesselate” and “Handmade” are the best tracks here, but everything else is worthwhile as well. Joe Newman’s vocals seem strange at times, but his voice fits perfectly. An Awesome Wave takes chance after chance, and succeeds time after time with beautiful results. This album grooves, rocks, and moves you with seemingly little effort. It’s a fine and underrated work, and deserves more attention than it receives. Rock is dead? As of 2012 and An Awesome Wave, I don’t think so…it’s just not the rock your parents understood. Their second album, 2014’s This Is All Yours, fared even better, and while there isn’t anything on the horizon so far, expect more good things from Alt-J (they did release a live album from Red Rocks in 2016). A band worth checking out, and worth looking to the future for.

As you can see from the tracklist above, this was quite the undertaking by Amnesty International. The reality is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is the Starbucks version with 31 tracks. The full album is actually four discs with 73 tracks. A powerful testament to how prolific Bob Dylan has been over the past five plus decades…and to how his music continues to reach out and touch the musicians of today. Even on this shortened version, the performances are amazingly good and the tribute is sincere. You know you’re in for a treat with Pete Townshend opening the album with a fine “Corrina, Corrina”. The real highlights here are provided by Adele (“To Bring You My Love”), Jackson Browne with “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”, and a gritty, down to earth stunner from Kris Kristofferson (“Quinn The Eskimo”). Silversun Pickups, Lucinda Williams and Sting provide additional highlights.

Surprises? How about Maroon 5 bringing a fine version of “I Shall Be Released”? Old friends? Joan Baez is here. Even Johnny Cash makes an appearance from beyond the grave. This shows just how massive Dylan’s influence is. The 4 disc version contains additional tracks by Pete Seeger, Miley Cyrus (!), Billy Bragg, Joe Perry, Cage The Elephant…an amazing list. An amazing album filled with great songs and great performances, and it’s also all for a great cause. This is a truly fine tribute album. It may be long, but hey…it’s Bob Dylan. It should be long. And it should be excellent. It is.
