As you can see from the tracklist above, this was quite the undertaking by Amnesty International. The reality is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is the Starbucks version with 31 tracks. The full album is actually four discs with 73 tracks. A powerful testament to how prolific Bob Dylan has been over the past five plus decades…and to how his music continues to reach out and touch the musicians of today. Even on this shortened version, the performances are amazingly good and the tribute is sincere. You know you’re in for a treat with Pete Townshend opening the album with a fine “Corrina, Corrina”. The real highlights here are provided by Adele (“To Bring You My Love”), Jackson Browne with “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”, and a gritty, down to earth stunner from Kris Kristofferson (“Quinn The Eskimo”). Silversun Pickups, Lucinda Williams and Sting provide additional highlights.
Surprises? How about Maroon 5 bringing a fine version of “I Shall Be Released”? Old friends? Joan Baez is here. Even Johnny Cash makes an appearance from beyond the grave. This shows just how massive Dylan’s influence is. The 4 disc version contains additional tracks by Pete Seeger, Miley Cyrus (!), Billy Bragg, Joe Perry, Cage The Elephant…an amazing list. An amazing album filled with great songs and great performances, and it’s also all for a great cause. This is a truly fine tribute album. It may be long, but hey…it’s Bob Dylan. It should be long. And it should be excellent. It is. [First added to this chart: 11/04/2012]

1. Vulcano
2. Art Of Metal I
3. Art Of Metal III
First of all, I think I should clarify that you are not going to find a single note of guitar on this album. Even though two of the three tracks are titled Art Of Metal, it’s not traditional metal rock music. Metal, in this case, refers to Alain Billard’s instrument, which is the metal contrabass clarinet. This is classical music…but this is not your great grandfather’s Beethoven. This music is by the French composer Yann Robin, and even though it’s not metal as you know it, this is not for the light hearted. Conducted by Susanna Malkki, this music goes from being almost jazz to downright frightening. There are moments of beauty, but if that’s what you’re looking for, you won’t find much of that here. This album plays like a soundtrack to a haunted amusement park, and if you dare to listen to it in the dark, it could scare the crap out of you.
These three long tracks are avant-garde journeys that take some getting used to, but which can also be quite rewarding. The Ensemble InterContemporain works in different sizes, from 17 to 29 players, and is an excellent group. The third track also incorporates electronics into the mix. Each one of these tracks is over twenty minutes long, so the music is allowed to stretch out and breathe quite a bit. Once again…this is not music that will be a fit for everyone. It’s quite possible that you may find it to be overwhelming, and some may find it simply unlistenable. But there are some stunning moments in this music as well. While it may seem somewhat brutal at times, there is also a real beauty to this modern classical journey that can be worthwhile to a listener with an open mind. If you’re willing to take a journey like this, you may be pleasantly surprised by it. [First added to this chart: 12/14/2017]
