The high points are really some of the greatest deathgrind-moments of the last years. Critiques I have with other metal albums about them being too cliché or the vocalist being unbearable (as in pretentious or cringe) ain't toooo much to be found here. I respect Anna's brutal screams and unreal growls all over.
Most of the songs go on without a moment of pause. The intense and breakneck speed of the music and the way it can shift in a millsecond from Grindey visciousness to Progressive metal wankery, to Brutal death metal with serious heavy groove to a clean pop sounding vocal mixed with almost groove metal sounds, to super technical starnge time signature Death Metal to an almost impossibly fast double bass percussive onslaught, to a moment with weird electronic sounds being introduced etc etc etc... it left me not a second of chill time, there is always something going on and something quite dense at that. And I love it. Sometimes. Cause it can get forced in the long run. As is some of those shorter cuts like Reaping The Flesh of Zeruel and Love Is Destructive - those have precisely nothing new to offer for the experiencer. Anna can periodically try so hard that the songs can blend in with each other. At the same time, the flow from track to track absolutely sucks ass. A song can start very somewhat weird, in contrast to its preceding track unnaturally. Which is a disadvantage when an album this open about being convincing to the listener, gets unconvincing.
That being said, the highlights should be given a chance! New school Deathgrind at its most memorable. Like the way Nadira opens up with no build up, just the gigantic storm from the first blink of an eye. It's also one of the album's best structured songs. Skyward stands out because it incorporate a pop punk chorus, but it sits very well within. The other two great ones here are just pure hardcore madness; A Whisper In The Rain and the short closer How Disgusting are funny but fine as heckfire.
And the most impressive thing about DARSWBWF? It's all one person doing it! Now that's mad. Even when the album grew off me as a Christian, I still respect that! [First added to this chart: 05/26/2025]
