Here's a nice little slice of history for ya. Back in 1967, before Woodstock, and before the 60's ended at Altamont, there was the Monterey Pop Festival. And just from looking at the lineup, it was quite the event. Jimi, Janis & Otis were all alive, and they were all there. And even though some of the recordings sound pretty rough (it WAS 1967), this is what rock was at the time. This is what the 60's sounded like, and this is what the big deal was. This package came out 40 years later, and includes previously unreleased tracks by Simon & Garfunkel and Buffalo Springfield.
The highlights are everywhere...The Who, Hendrix, Airplane...but just as important are the tracks by forgotten acts like Electric Flag, The Association, and Country Joe & The Fish. This is a great historical document, and hopefully Monterey will always live on. A real, true classic.

So, what's so impressive about 3 discs worth of Bob Dylan castoffs that didn't make it to the original albums? We can start with the fact that this set is better than the entire careers of most artists. That what we've seen from the stunningly prolific Dylan is, based on the fact that The Bootleg Series is now up to double digit volumes, is more than just an amazing body of work. And that Dylan left much of his better work on the studio floor, particularly into the 1980's.
This box set contains a stunning amount of music, and does right by running chronologically from 1961 through 1991. Many of the songs were covered by other artists while these versions lay in cheap bootlegs or unheard. A few are alternate versions of famous songs, others are new to the listener. In all, this is a great journey, a series that never gets old. A fine addition to any Dylan collection that stands on its own. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2026]

One of the more consistently cool American indie bands. Okkervil River takes their name from a Russian short story, and they have been making music on their own terms since being discovered at South By Southwest in 1998 and recording their debut in an actual garage. The consistent main member is Will Sheff, who has seen a slew of bandmates come and go over the years. This EP actually works as a companion piece to their third album, Black Sheep Boy…the pair are often sold together as a package. Appendix contains reworked songs from Black Sheep Boy, as well as unfinished material and a pair of unrelated tracks. Both discs are pretty bleak…Black Sheep Boy was inspired by the late Tim Hardin and his heroin addiction, as well as the fact that Sheff had found himself homeless trying to keep his band afloat because of low album sales. Yeah.
Taken on its own, Appendix holds up well. It’s dark and endlessly interesting, with lush orchestrations, soft effects, and an outright rocker in “Another Radio Song”. It’s short (it is an EP) at just over 25 minutes, but consider it as a taste of what you’ll get with the more complete and full Black Sheep Boy. Some things here sound incomplete…because they are. Much of it is very solid, and it turns out that the inconsistencies give it an unexpected charm. Okkervil River is never boring, a band with many twists and turns in their music. They backed psychedelic music legend Roky Erikson on an album in 2010, but haven’t released anything since 2018. Hopefully there will be more from this band. Appendix is not perfect, but it’s very good. I would say get the twofer to get the full effect of the project…you can likely find it at a discounted price these days. Fans of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers always had to settle for the not very good live album Pack Up The Plantation. That all changed in 2009 with the release of the stunning 4 disc Live Anthology. It plays like a marathon live show, but it's actually a well thought out and expertly assembled collage of performances dating from 1980 through 2007. Example: "Free Fallin" from a 2005 show goes seamlessly into a 1981 recording of "The Waiting", without so much as a hiccup in the crowd noise. Brilliance.
The album shows that while Petty can stay very true to his studio recordings, he can also stretch out and jam ("It's Good To Be King" runs a nice 12 plus minutes), that he has great taste in cover material ("Friend Of The Devil", "Something In The Air", "Mystic Eyes"), and that he does not fear his non hits ("My Life/Your World"). This is one of the finest live collections you'll find, a great summary to a great career. And it's long, long overdue. This is THE best Petty album. Period. [First added to this chart: 08/14/2026]

This should be the motherlode for Prince fans...3 discs, 56 songs, all of them excellent proof that this guy was maybe the most talented guy on the planet. But there are some negatives. There is no order to the songs...chronological would be nice: instead, it's all over the map. And several songs are radio friendly shortened versions. Cut a small handfull and give us full versions of songs like "1999" and "When Doves Cry".
On the plus side, there are songs here you'll never get anywhere else. And his own take on songs he gave to others, including "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Erotic City". It's a sprawling collection of great songs...no one else could pull off a collection like this. And the liner notes are excellent as well. It's very good, but you're always better off with the original albums. This will work at a party, though. [First added to this chart: 08/12/2026]
