Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.9/100, a mean average of 76.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.4.

Jason Isbell is one of the musicians and songwriters I respect most because he takes raw honesty and vulnerability, and converts these into art that feels real and true. I also admire him because the genre of southern Americana in which he works results in a very mixed fan base: some (such as myself) who relate to and support his progressive politics, and some who flock to social media to tell Isbell he's stupid and that he should "shut up and sing." I've never quite been able to make sense of the kind of person who'd sing along to "White Man's World," an obviously political song about white male privilege, but then insist that Isbell should keep his political opinions to himself on social media. Not every song here is political, but it's of consistently great quality, and "If We Were Vampires" is one of the most deeply affecting love songs I've ever heard.

I personally like this album better than his last "something more than free". It seems in step with his growing maturity as a songwriter. If we were Vampires is one of the best songs he's written.
