The centrepiece of, Sgt. Pepper. It's fantastic that, a day in the life, appears after the, Sgt. Pepper reprise, as if to say, hey, we're not finished yet. It's the perfect end to a perfect album, one of the first albums to capture the time and place it was written and recorded in. 'I'd love to turn you on', 'she blew his mind out in a car', and 'had a smoke and someone spoke and I went into a dream', are all great lines capturing the language of the counter culture and the youth of the time. A day in the life, is a masterpiece, but I don't think it totally works on it's own. Maybe it's because I'm so used to hearing it in the context of the album, but to experience the full impact of the song, it has to be listened to as part of the, Sgt. Pepper, album, as the stunning climax to a stunning album. It's a fantastic song, but it wouldn't work as a single or a stand-alone song. Still, as part of the greatest album ever made, it's brilliant. (Edited)
Not my favourite song of all time, but I have no problems with it being number one because it's absolutely fantastic. (Edited)
This is what Lennon and McCartney on a quest to find out what life is sounds like. The contrasting dynamics between Lennon's spaced out surrealism and Paul's folky routine make each portion that much more emphasized, and then the final cord is orgasmic in how it releases the tension and flow of the album.

Songs that are better:
'Life on mars?' or 'Rock n' Roll Suicide' By David Bowie
'Time', 'Two suns in the sunset', or 'Wish you were here' by Pink Floyd.
Plenty of other beatles songs, like 'Oh! Darling', 'while my guitar gently weeps', etc.
Basically half of Radioheads "OK Computer" and "Kid A", like 'Paranoid android', 'Exit music (for a film)', or 'How to disappear completely', etc.
I laugh at the retards who gave this song 5%.
