Despite not being music related, I was also thinking about posting this. I'll be straight, I've only ever seen him in The Wire, but what a phenomenal role (and equally exquisite performance). Great voice too. Weird to hear someone so young and in shape died of natural causes. He had a bit of a career uptick the last few years... think I read he was even in the middle of a press tour. Sad news.

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou passed away at 99 today.

I know she's not the most familiar name, but she's definitely an interesting story— a classically-trained Ethiopian nun pianist— who, by a bit of luck (for us), has had a slew of reissues the past few years. Her compositions landed soundtracks for a handful of recent (coincidentally? b&w) films— C'Mon C'Mon, Passing, Time— and she even had a Éthiopiques compilation.

Her latest reissue/comp Jerusalem is due next week. Hope you check it out.

Ryuichi Sakamoto has passed away at 71.

Saw some people mentioning him and thought it was just an odd coincidence— wasn't expecting it to be because he died. He was still active in a successful late-career phase, his last release came out only in January. Apparently funeral services were sometime last week. Only two months after his YMO bandmate Yukihiro Takahashi passed away too—

I feel a little bad not exactly enjoying his latest release, but he still has a beautiful discography—

Async by Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ongaku Zukan by Ryuichi Sakamoto

1996 by Ryuichi Sakamoto

Cendre by Fennesz & Sakamoto

Perpetual by Ryuichi Sakamoto / Illuha ...or Deupree

The Revenant (Original Motion Picture S...ce Dessner

(& Utau) — not on the site yet.

+ the iconic/influential/innovative—

Thousand Knives by Ryuichi Sakamoto
—which set the path for the future of Japanese music.

RIP

He released a very solid album just a few months ago... At least a dozen classics (YMO + solo), some of which have completely changed the landscape of music industry. One of the first ambient artists I've discovered - I was listening to his late career stuff before I even knew who he was and what he'd done in the 70s and 80s. Prolific score writer as well, an all around impeccable musician. RIP.

Ahmad Jamal has passed at the age of 92. One of my favorite Jazz pianists. Love his style.

Wasn’t expecting this info to ever become public, but MF DOOM’s widow revealed he died to due a sudden severe medication complication. Apparently he was perfectly healthy just 10 days prior.

Details are very sad. She describes the hospital conditions, and the entire situation is depressing.

Yeah, I just had a read of that yesterday. Made an already bad situation even worse.

Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu

In other not great news, Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Obits, etc. fame passed away a few days ago.

Yank Crime is essential listening to me. And, if you've never seen any of their live performances, they absolutely ripped.

Very sad news about DOOM indeed, I don't want to say he died because of mistreatment in the hospital, but the conditions definitely weren't perfect. Another terrible consequence of COVID waves.

Chief you were the one who recommended me Yank Crime years ago, it's insanely good. RIP Froberg.
