A really beautiful and quiet album. Enjoyable listen.
Simply beautiful. Overshadowed by BOTW, but shines brightly in its own right.
I love "Bookends Theme".
I'm gonna have to disagree a bit here. This one includes Paul & Art's two best recordings together in Mrs. Robinson and Hazy Shade of Winter but other than that there isn't much to jump for on it. Not bad but somewhat dull. Still worth the price of admission for those two.
This is yet another great folk pop album from S&G. Maybe they go a little overboard with effects (like how the gospel-like vocals are piped in in "save the life of my child" and the voices in "voices of old people" go on a little long), but the album is still great regardless and feels BIG overall, from the cymbal flourishes in "america" to the pipe organ and strings in "fakin' it".
"punky's dilemma" has a fun line about blueberry jam my wife digs ("I prefer boysenberry / More than any ordinary jam. / I'm a "Citizens for / Boysenberry Jam" fan."). The last three songs are probably the best last 3 closers on any S&G disc -- "mrs. robinson", "a hazy shade of winter" (i probably still prefer the bangles version) and "at the zoo" -- the last of which sounds like a kids zoo tale but is lyrically bleak where the animals are dumb, insincere, skeptical, reactionary and plot in secrecy while the zookeeper drinks his rum.
A lovely album. These guys knew what they were doing.
brilliant album. agreed with others on here who say "this is their best album".
One of my very favorite albums.
Side one is a perfect mini concept album on life, and side two is filled with excellent pop songs. Beautiful arrangements, and just a spectacular album!
"Bookends Theme" most beautiful and sad piece of music in one, and to do that in 1:24 is pretty spectacular
