Top 23 Music Albums of 2014 by soundguardian

I haven't yet had much opportunity to listen to a lot of albums from this year, as I've had a hectic schedule this semester. As I listen to more, I'll augment the listing, as well as add description to each entry to explain my choices! xD

♫ Musicianship & Skill :: (9) The album is demonstrative of a band clearly in their zone - a record completely refined in Spoon's signature sound, 18 years in the making at the time of this 8th full-length release.
♫ Composition :: (8) Spoon takes full advantage of its integral members' capabilities with the musical ideas presented, which leads to an execution that's assured in its talent and versatility.
♫ Song Integration & Texture :: (10) From gorgeous trip-hop-like beat and soundscapes in "Inside Out" to the dissonances in "Knock Knock Knock", there are many different moods, feels, and ideas presented through diverse and effective use of texture.
♫ Song Structure & Form :: (10) Nothing new here - they're all mostly 3-5 minute songs with typical Verse-Chorus-Verse structure (save, perhaps, a couple, like "Knock Knock Knock"). But they're all so tightly composed and executed that none of the tracks can possibly be disagreeable, and they all justify their length and form.
♫ Record Cohesion :: (8) The record is the typical smash of various songs - They Want My Soul is upheld by the consistency and diversity of tracks, not by its concept. And it surprisingly flows well, even if there's no centralized idea other than the signature Spoon sound and the valuable themes in each track. Again, the quality of songs throughout is extremely consistent - there's not a "bad" track, only "good" ones.
♫ Vision :: (8) Daniels and Spoon appear to have simply wanted a consistent, efficacious release with some heterogeneity and a set of infectious hooks, while not compromising their sound. They did a pretty good job.
♫ Lyricism & Intent :: (9) The songs on They Want My Soul explore a variety of things, like dysfunctional relationships, break-up, and perspective on life's misgivings. I only wonder what the band members' inspiration were for writing some of the lyrical content.
♫ Intellectual Impact :: (9) Hi-quality lyrical content is often associated with an album's intellectual impact - and never more so than here. For example, "They Want My Soul" is surprisingly insightful and succinct in how it identifies harboring resentment for others is wasteful in energy and time; the opener "Rent I Pay" speaks of self-sacrifice.
♫ Emotional Impact :: (8) Apparently Daniel has conventionally had a gruffer exterior in his lyricism and delivery, but in this release it seems to me that he yields to some emotive appeal. He draws agonized sensitivity from the falsetto'd "I had no good news!" in "Rainy Taxi" and the despondency of "but the way you mistreat me / I just don't understand..." in "I Just Don't Understand". Between the instrumentals and Daniel's delivery, some of the moments in They Want My Soul are magical and play with your (the listener) emotions, transforming from song to song, like a puppeteer's control, act-to-act.
♫ Tone / Effectiveness :: (9)
♫ Creativity / Innovation :: (7) Although fresh to hear a band so confident in its deliverables, Spoon steers clear of new territory in favor of a tight release, sacrificing a potentially exceptional and unparagoned release. Generally, this is highly risk-averse.
♫ Production Quality :: (10) A couple of weird things happen in track-to-track transitions (most are seamless), but other than that, the engineering and mastering are superb.

OVERALL CONSENSUS - 104/120 (Superb)

Favorite Tracks: 1) "Inside Out" // 2) "Knock Knock Knock" // 3) "Do You" // 4) "Rainy Taxi" // 5) "Let Me Be Mine" // 6) "New York Kiss"
