The production sounds strangely out of wack. There are some complaints that can be levied against this album. The thing is that this album is So Goddamn Good despite any of that bullshit that it doesn't really matter! The lyrics of Paul Westerberg stand tall on here. He really took his songwriting chops to another level for this album. The lyrics to songs like "Bastards of Young" and "Swingin' Party" clearly express youthful anger, unrest and basic Fear. He does this with amazing coolness and nonchalance. Yet this album for me gets so emotional sometimes I can't take it. I think that's because the words cut so close to the bone. Westerberg really nails the basic feelings of youth on many of the songs here. He also knows how to write a love song with the best of them. There is something so romantic and romanticized about these songs - witness "Kiss Me On The Bus" and "Hold My Life" and "Little Mascara". Also this album does not take itself so seriously throughout, with such playful songs as "Waitress In The Sky" an the hard rocking track "Dose of Thunder". And when it comes to good rock and roll with really great songwriting, great hooks, and some excellent variety, this album really delivers. There's not a bad track on here. And the brilliance of the songwriting throughout is phenomenal. "Bastards of Young", "Left of the Dial" "Swinging Party" "Kiss Me On The Bus" "Hold my life" and of course the painful and haunting "The Regular" are so incredibly well written. The reasons why this album is so important and great in my eyes is very subjective. But I think almost anyone can listen and be blown away by how both Cool and Powerful this band was in their prime. I would argue that this album is softer and perhaps more accessible than Foxtrot and The Lamb, mainly because of Collins' voice (NOT the direction of the band...that would come later). They were just as progressive here as they were on their previous four albums. The album's sound is probably closest to Selling England: Collins sings a lot like Gabriel did on that album (probably because his voice is softer and more soulful), and there's about an equal proportion of ballads and heavier tracks. Collins isn't as edgy a singer as Gabriel, but the band compensates by playing with more aggression on tracks like Dance on a Volcano. Collins' drumming is particularly powerful on this album: he's jazzy and fast. Hell, Los Endos is borderline fusion due to the style of drumwork. This album is a legitimate contender for Genesis' best for two reasons: (1) The musicianship is sharper than ever before, and (2) Even with Gabriel out of the picture, the songwriting and singing didn't take a hit. Remarkably, the band neither improved nor devolved due to Gabriel's departure. That says a lot about a band! I think Gabriel's departure was good for all parties involved. Banks, Rutherford, and Collins would eventually develop a mutual interest in crafting pop songs, and Gabriel had free reign to experiment with styles outside of Genesis' core sound. Both Gabriel and Genesis would knock each other off the charts in the future, FYI."  [+]  Reply

As someone who plays guitar and dabbles in songwriting I listen to a lot of music and think "If I was more focused I could've written this", then you hear someone with a natural gift like Isaac Brock and think "Why bother?" The variety of songs is such that on first listen I thought it sounded like a compilation of different bands, a feeling enhanced by Brock's ability to go from a cute little Doug Martsch/Wayne Coyne kind of voice to a big shouty Frank Black voice with apparent ease. On subsequent listens as the songs settled in my mind and I became comfortable with the reality that there was only 1 vocalist and not 2 or 3 as I'd first thought I realised I was in the prescence of a special talent. The one question mark that hangs in my head is how calculated the songs are. Has Brock set out to write a Pixies song, a Built to Spill song, a Tom Waits song etc? But if he has what the hell? if you're good enough to write songs like those people go for it. Propelled by the infectiousness of Float On, Bury Me With It and Dancehall (which should come with a medical warning: Do not consume in a public place as IT WILL MAKE you jump around like an idiot) I feel like this album is on an inexorable path towards my top 100 chart and it's gonna take some stopping."  [+]  Reply

But what makes this album great is the duo of Wings Part 1 and 2. I'm a firm believer that 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) is ...""The more I listen, the more magnificent it becomes. 75/100 is unbelievably low for this record. The Pot, Vicarious, Right in Two, and Jambi are all instant classic Tool songs. But what makes this album great is the duo of Wings Part 1 and 2. I'm a firm believer that 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) is one of the greatest songs ever written. The more I learn about it and the lyrical content, the more I listen closely to the ethereal nature, the layering, the harmonies, the more I'm absolutely blown away. It's scary how good that song is, so deep and so beautiful. Overall the 2nd half doesn't hold up to the impeccable 1st half, but as a whole it's great. "  [+]  Reply
